Belle’s Journey
Written by Dr. Rob Bierregaard & Illustrated by Kate Garchinsky
Take flight with Belle, an osprey born on Martha’s Vineyard as she learns to fly and migrates for the first time to Brazil and back–a journey of more than 8,000 miles.
IMPORTANT: Messages from osprey experts
I haven’t seen the little guy yet this morning, but I would be very surprised if he survived the night. That sure was tough to watch yesterday, but that whole process is as much a part of the essence of being an Osprey as is eating a fish. It’s part of the life of Ospreys that was rarely seen before we started putting cameras in nests. As hard as it is, we should not label the behavior as mean or cruel. Being mean or cruel implies that there is intent to do harm just for harm’s sake. Those young were responding to a set of stimuli (very little food being delivered to the nest and the presence of a very small young) in a way that evolution has hard-wired into them. It helps ensure their survival. Nature is not cruel. It is harsh, unforgiving, and often random (had the little guy been born 1st, he would have been just as aggressive as was his sibling), but not cruel or mean.

Thanks Rob for bringing your knowledge and experience to help us all gain perspective here. We are all saddened by the events that unfolded before our eyes and it’s only natural for all of us to feel and express our emotions appropriately. There have been many issues pertaining to intervention which have been discussed amongst us all. There is no doubt in my mind that the right decision was made, to let nature take it’s course. By the way, that doesn’t equate to heartless, on the contrary, nobody feels worse about this then the apparent decision makers. I say apparent, because when all was said and done, and all the issues were properly weighed, there really weren’t any other options. It was clearly pointed out, by experts, that intervening at this stage could have spooked the whole nest to the point of losing all the young. If the little one was saved, and nursed back to health, what kind of a life would it have had, perhaps caged up in a zoo. I remember when I was younger I saw a golden eagle in captivity, caged behind a wire mesh. I could practically see it’s tears. As far as placing the little one in another nest, such a low probability of success would never have justified the possibility of spooking the nest. There’s a piece of me, however heavy hearted, that believes that perhaps it is better to be born free and die free. We mourn for the little one as we marvel at the wonders of nature.
Hello Paul,
Thanks for your query, and you have my admiration for persevering. We know very well how tough your job is, including dealing with an anxious public.
Our policy with our Bird Cams project is essentially “just say no” to pleas for interference. The behavior you are witnessing – while seemingly cruel and heartless to us – is natural for many kinds of birds, especially those that feed on variable, unpredictable food supplies. The little nestling does have a chance to survive, but if it does not then that result was “meant to be” by the nature of Osprey breeding strategy. The wonderful things about these nest cameras also sometimes yield the difficult things for us to watch. As you might know, we actually post a “siblicide alert” on some of our cams where we suspect the possibility exists.
I’m copying your note to Charles Eldermire, project leader for our Bird Cams. He may have some additional comments, and he would be the one to ask if we might be able to use your stored files for biological analysis.
Best wishes, and good luck,
John W. Fitzpatrick
Director, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
It’s also important to acknowledge that intervening can also cause problems of its own—depending on the ages of the birds in the nest, disturbing them can trigger an early fledge. We have restricted the scenarios in which we would even consider intervening to injuries or dangers that are explicitly human-derived. For example, 3 or 4 years ago we were alerted by viewers that one of the osprey chicks at the Hellgate Osprey nest was entangled in monofilament line. We consulted with our partners there (wildlife biologists, raptor researchers, raptor rehabbers) to determine if the monofilament was an issue, and if intervening was both likely to solve the issue AND not have bad effects on the other nestlings. In the end, a quick trip to the nest was scheduled via a bucket truck, the monofilament was removed, and the nestlings all eventually fledged. In that case, all of the permits were already in hand to be studying the ospreys, and we had already discussed how to approach issues in the nest.
Good luck to the young one—hope it all turns out well.
charles.

I’ve been to your site—great cam! And I noticed the runt in the nest. This is just normal Osprey reproduction. It happens all the time and you should not intervene. It’s tough to watch, but it’s how nature works. Ospreys almost always lay 3 eggs and on average fledge between 1 and 1.5 young each year. They stagger the hatch so there is a spread of ages in the young. That way, if food is short, the first-hatched (and therefore largest) will get enough food to survive while the smaller nest mates do not. If all three young were the same size and there was only enough food for 1 young, none of the young would get enough food and they would all die. If there’s lots of food, the smallest will eventually get fed and can survive. These nest cams can show some gut-wrenching scenes. The most infamous perhaps was one of the very first Osprey cams (on Long Island somewhere), where the smallest young died. One of the adults carried it out of the nest and after several minutes flew back into the nest and fed it to the other young. Waste-not-want-not at its goriest. At Hog Island up in Maine just last week a Bald Eagle came in and took the young out of the nest. Last year at another nest, cameras documented a Great-horned Owl taking young Ospreys out of a nest in NJ or MD. All of these things have been going on for millions of years and Ospreys are doing fine.

Thanks for keeping track of all this!
Racing in to see the fish….and George…
Both chicks were in nest . There was some rain last night and everything is still very wet and muggy already.
Good sized fish to start the day. Blondie is happy!
Brownie shows up to beg from Blondie….good luck!
He started harassing her enough that she gave up fish. Probably full anyway. There’s a good sized piece left, which Brownie takes and goes….about 6:45am
I like Solar /Ecilpse as well

8-23-17 Reply- Betsy Thank you for sharing you can only make so much magic happen when so much is out of your control. The video is better than nothing and so many of us missed the whole event so we are thankful to see what you could record.
While I am saying Thank Yous glad you are posting pictures of their age keeping us aware how fast they are growing.
Thanks for the effort………..video was rough that day…
@16:42….George dropped in and got an earful from two empty kids…
6 mins. later—–Here comes Dad!
CHARGE!!!!!
Hmmmm…..no fish for YOU!
Brownie’ turn to thank Dad…………….
17:05—Blondie coming back in with leftovers in her fishcase,,,,
17:12- yet another juicy porgy from George but no takers, so he keeps it for himself.
And wrong picture above. Bound to happen…way past my bedtime!
This picture was showing that both kids are staying in nest, Maybe so windy they don’t want to stay on perch? Stayed till after dark.
Weather for tonight called for some t-storms after midnight but that no longer shows on weather app. Que sera sera……in any case, mid 70s and muggy overnight with cloudy skies and high 70s tomorrow.
Might as well post George now. Has a nice fish to show off!
14:53- Calisthenics….Raise those wings! Push them out!
Higher!!!!!! Wider!!!!
I also like Breeze & Spirit for the chicks
8-23-17 Reply- Judy F, I have added your choices to the list, thanks for joining in. I feel we had such an Easy, Peasy Season this year with no drama having 2 babies that they are perfect names for our babies. They do not stay in the nest as much as our previous babies had in the past, which also makes think they just want to fly around and be free. Which is why Breeze & Spirit are fitting for them just my thoughts. Although their landings need some practice sometimes lol.
Name suggestion: Luna and Sol.
Love Solar & Eclipse.
8-23-17 Reply- Dan, thank you for joining, I have added your choices to the list, these 2 names ( Solar & Eclipse ) are really bringing in the votes, good luck.

8-22-17 Please check to make sure name and choices are on the list from today I had to go by emails I received since I could not get previous page to open on OZ with everyone’s posts.
I want to thank everyone for joining in and feel free after seeing the list to change your choices at anytime until 8-29-17.

Thank you for doing this, dear Rj, have gotten used to Blondie & Brownie since dear CarolV started naming them, will stick with that! xoxo
8-23-17 Reply- Patty K, You are welcome glad you are still with us as our Osprey Family Follower, we have had a wonderful, successful year so far and with 2 babies no drama.
I just wish Gracie would hang out in the nest more usually we would see Geo feed her some at this time. Gracie will be leaving soon if she did not leave already so I have been missing her ever since she moved out of the nest. But we have 2 healthy babies and George to look at for Now. Take care 🙂
I have added your names to the list.

Looks like partylights across the nest!
There is something about page 65. Wouldn’t respond when I tried to go back. So I clicked on 63. Went right to it. Hit next, went right to 64. Hit next and 65 just comes up white with an identifier across the top. Is anyone else having trouble?
@18:54–George delivers..
Having trouble posting again. Said first try didn’t go thru……
Looked like Brownie was going to get it, but Blondie did the under grab….
Seemed very pleased with herself!
There have been so many good suggestions for names! I don’t know how we will choose! I commented on a few that caught my eye.
With all the email jumping I’ve had to do, I’m back to my original. But now I can’t access pg. 65 ,or hit previous, to read any new comments before the page turned. Maybe it was a glitch for that page?
Rjoneal..I know my name picks are Mattie n Jack, please cancel them out…will go with Daly

8-22-17 June C your new choices should be on list above dated 8-22-17.
There’s something wrong with page 65. Whether you click on “previous” while on page 66, “next” while on page 64 or directly on page 65 it just opens to a blank page.
See attached picture.
I hope they can recover that page! Changed between 4 email addresses posting to that page! Each worked for awhile; then THAT page showed.

Blondie moved where we could see her; she ate most of that fish, then looked up to perch and flew to side to get around. Fishtail stayed.
This is the 4th email. #3 just froze. Will be interesting to see what actually posts…..and if I have to start inventing more email addresses!
George drops down to clean up. Checks around nest and heads to perch. I double checked to be sure it was George!
@19:17- Blondie drops from perch….
…as George comes in with a fish.
It seemed like Blondie wanted George to let the fish go, but she finally reached in to take it; then mantled.
George checks the nest, then goes…
16:38–Blondie flies in
…..just ahead of George @16:39
“Thanks, Dad! You already de-headed! Straight to the gooey parts !!!!
When Brownie shows up, he fails to get sympathy, despite his continuous whinge……………..
Brownie did a sidle in end run and Blondie’s sitting complaining now. George dropped in with some seaweed and got comments from both of them….
I spy with my little eye……..a Redkayak?
Some more shots from the past few days that I liked…
Brownie’s “Angry Bird”….8/17/17
8/18/17—Friday was a miserable day….it rained most of the morning…… different parts of the Island were dumped on like a fire hose-where my son was working(East Hampton) had torrential downpours for 1&1/2 hrs.; at my house, we had steady rain with a few quick, hard showers. Cutchogue, where I work, had a flooded parking lot and part of the ceiling in our back room collapsed (I was off). Meanwhile, the nest in East Marion(about 15-20 miles west of Cutchogue, looked wet but not overwhelmed.
8/19/17- Blondie showing off her flying technique…..
@ 5:41……..Blondie hesitated so Brownie snatched the breakfish from George
@6:34–Blondie got her fish….
I’m working on a 3rd email to post thru. The 2nd one started screwing up the same as the 1st.
Beautiful day, beautiful bird!
Blondie checking out something down below….she has had a lot of complaints, some of them aimed directly at the perch.
Names Porgy & Bass
Reply- Tucker I got your names on list. Thanks for posting.
Funny!
I’M WAITING!!!!!!!
INCOMING!
LOOK!
HI! Did you miss me?
BTW- Blondie enjoying fish…..
Windy at the nest…but a beautiful, sunny day.
A lady of mystery…we can only speculate. Exploring the Island since the kids are doing well?
Dear CarolV, That’s my biggest worry about these two youngsters. They are still waiting not catching. As soon as I see them bringing back their own catches I will be much relieved. Unless I have just missed them being successful on their own I have yet to see them do it. If I am wrong do not hesitate to tell me. Bob
Bob, it is not at all uncommon that a juvenile osprey doesn’t catch its first fish until migration. Hunger is a real motivater lol
But we are learning more and more about a juvenile’s behavior thanks to the cams!
In South Carolina there’s a nest in a yard of a house on a lake and the owner has seen a juvy catch a fish just this season!
So it is possible and probably happens more than we know.
Dear Shelli, Thanks for the reply. I’m sure you are correct although my memory keeps telling me that last year’s young didn’t take long after leaving the nest before they brought in their own catches. I’m only guessing and your info makes me feel more comfortable about the present status of the little ones. We’ll see soon enough. Regards, Bob
Your very welcome Bob! Remember, just because we see a chick bring a fish to the nest doesn’t mean they actually caught it. Many times they will follow a parent to a perch and steal a meal hahahaaa. I first saw this behavior in 2014 on the Hellgate nest.
Just some shots from past few days that I liked…
GORGEOUS GEORGE!!!!!
8/18—- LET IT FLY!
8/17…..Our beautiful kids!
8/17….unknown intruder harasses our juvies…bumps Brownie twice and then when Brownie flew out, came back and whacked Blondie.

Trying this shot from yesterday that I liked. Seeing if my original email goes thru today…..
@8:17—George brings in fresh seaweed………….
Thanks for blocking that blinding sun!

Sunday morn and 2 kids waiting………………

Rjoneal- Thank you … and Thank You TRS for access and support…and our Whole OZ Family for all your great pics and posts!
ps. has anyone seen our Mattituck Plaza Osprey family? I haven’t seen any activity there in over a week.
Rjoneal: Re your asking if I made a video of chick #1’s fledge and, if so, if I plan on posting it:
Yes I did and no I do not. I had been posting pictures and videos for the pure and simple reason of my love for watching George and Gracie and the joy of sharing highlights or funny moments with others who may have missed them. There are no monetary benefits for me (or, if I had one, my company) or compensation for my time and efforts. I was attacked on more than one occasion, thus proving the idiom that someone posted previously that no good deed goes unpunished. Therefore, posting videos is no longer a consideration for me. I do, however, plan to continue posting the occasional picture.
BTW, for names, I’m going with Blondie and Brownie since it was me who first described them (in my June 26, 2017 at 3:04 am post) as blonde and brunette (“In this picture chick #2 is on the left. She has more dark head feathers overall making her look more “brunette” whereas chick #1 looks more “blond.””) which CarolV obviously liked so much she ran with it, changing the brunette to Brownie.
Reply- Elaine I did not get your message till after I posted 1st list your name should be on new update thanks for joining. I got your names on list now.

A wet looking Blondie hanging around the nest.
We had a pretty good rain on my side of the island….and thunder too.
@11:28–George brings in a decent sized portion of fish to Blondie
She did some wing-surfing while standing at the edge of the nest.
Blondie eventually took off, landed and took off again, taking her fish for a sail.
@7:20–Blondie calling for room service……….
Blondie short fished again! Your timing is off, baby!
Just a tail; and a small one, at that! But I’ll take it, says Blondie………….
George delivers a real fish to Brownie………..
.who says “all for me!”
Morning, Brownie!
@5:54- Thanks for poking your head in, Blondie!
@6am sharp, George lands with a smooshy looking footful but no one is home…
I think this was Blondie who came for the fish hash…..
It’s a gloomy, gray humid day…chance of showers in morning, late afternoon and overnight. T-storms a possibility . temps mid-high 70s and mid-low 70s overnight. Prime sitting in your own puddle weather, for those who don’t have a.c….me…
On the South Fork by me- there is no midday break, just chance of rain all day- as it is now.
SHOUT OUT- RC are you still with us ? I know you are a Floridian, hope all is well and get ready Osprey’s leave to migrate and we get the hurricanes. Hope you post and let us know if your are still watching our Osprey Family.
8-17-17 pic taken Baby1 seems to have a hard time tearing the fish apart at first but once he/she gets mouth part torn apart then he/she is good to go.
Of Course our Baby1 is like Brutus and Sandy still begging for Daddy to feed it. George being such a good dad he feeds Baby1 plus this way Geo got to eat some himself.
George is #1 Daddy! always takes care of his kids! Love him!
8-17-17 it was a quite an event full evening George was just trying to deliver a fish to the nest. I counted I think 6-7 attempts that George tried to make before finally succeeding.
Baby1 was eating a fish in the nest and baby2 was next to baby1. George flies in with fish and hits baby2 with fish and he/she gets knocked over. Baby2 gets scared when George comes around the second or third time and flies off the nest then returns and George comes back again and this goes on until finally the sixth or seventh time George finally makes it to the nest with the fish.
At first I thought it was an intruder because George kept knocking the babies in the nest over with that fish.
For whatever reason George was determined not to land in the middle of the nest he had a specific place he wanted to land and that’s all there was to it It didn’t matter that the babies were in the way that’s where he was going to land.
PLEASE CLICK ON PIC with Frame for a couple views of the event.

For the baby naming contest, I was thinking of some patriotic names. Maybe after a US President. Monroe and Madison?
8-18-17 Susan M I got your name choices on the list will post list tomorrow 8-19-17 Thanks for posting 🙂
I like Monroe and Madison also. They get my vote.
This is just to show that fish was plentiful and everyone ate….
@17:22—this was an odd incident with lots of rapid action. It was hard to follow especially since I really never saw much of the 3rd bird beyond legs…
@17:22:08…Blondie has a fish. Brownie is next to her when someone flies right into her…
17:22:22- second pass and Brownie gets knocked practically tail over teakettle…
He has been alerting and chases the intruder out, so it must be a stranger…with a fish in foot
@17:22:40- Another assault, this one on Blondie, who is alone this time.
Blondie either left after this or moved to patio. It was quite an event! Nest looked empty for a while.
There is a video on you tube of this incident………..
Osprey Zone Cam lot of activities 08 17 17
It was a busy afternoon again in the scrolback…
@15:04- both were in the nest, briefly…
Thought Blondie looked a little damp here….she was very busy fluffing and folding her feathers……..
@16:37….delivery to Blondie….it flopped around and was heading for edge, but she caught it…..
Here is a pic I posted in past of Blue Heron in my backyard,
Cool picture!
These birds always seem a little creepy, maybe because they are often portrayed as villains. But they are so majestic and move so elegantly! I’ve only seen videos of them hunting fish but loved watching them move. It was thru osprey watching I learned about them stealing chicks from nests. But somebody has to be the predator……………..
You’re so lucky to have such an unusual neighbor!
They are beautiful and the chicks are absolutely adorable.
pic 3 (sorry out of order)
2 pic
(1) First pic….Looks like chick #2 (I think) arrived back to nest being followed by an intruding Osprey, not once but I counted 3 x’s came around after #2 and the last time looked like #1 took a hit! Anyone else see it? What do you think?
CarolV posted a pic of Gracie bringing in fish on Aug. 15th at 18:42..does anyone have a picture after that of Gracie at nest?
