Belle’s Journey
Written by Dr. Rob Bierregaard & Illustrated by Kate Garchinsky
Take flight with Belle, an osprey born on Martha’s Vineyard as she learns to fly and migrates for the first time to Brazil and back–a journey of more than 8,000 miles.
IMPORTANT: Messages from osprey experts
I haven’t seen the little guy yet this morning, but I would be very surprised if he survived the night. That sure was tough to watch yesterday, but that whole process is as much a part of the essence of being an Osprey as is eating a fish. It’s part of the life of Ospreys that was rarely seen before we started putting cameras in nests. As hard as it is, we should not label the behavior as mean or cruel. Being mean or cruel implies that there is intent to do harm just for harm’s sake. Those young were responding to a set of stimuli (very little food being delivered to the nest and the presence of a very small young) in a way that evolution has hard-wired into them. It helps ensure their survival. Nature is not cruel. It is harsh, unforgiving, and often random (had the little guy been born 1st, he would have been just as aggressive as was his sibling), but not cruel or mean.

Thanks Rob for bringing your knowledge and experience to help us all gain perspective here. We are all saddened by the events that unfolded before our eyes and it’s only natural for all of us to feel and express our emotions appropriately. There have been many issues pertaining to intervention which have been discussed amongst us all. There is no doubt in my mind that the right decision was made, to let nature take it’s course. By the way, that doesn’t equate to heartless, on the contrary, nobody feels worse about this then the apparent decision makers. I say apparent, because when all was said and done, and all the issues were properly weighed, there really weren’t any other options. It was clearly pointed out, by experts, that intervening at this stage could have spooked the whole nest to the point of losing all the young. If the little one was saved, and nursed back to health, what kind of a life would it have had, perhaps caged up in a zoo. I remember when I was younger I saw a golden eagle in captivity, caged behind a wire mesh. I could practically see it’s tears. As far as placing the little one in another nest, such a low probability of success would never have justified the possibility of spooking the nest. There’s a piece of me, however heavy hearted, that believes that perhaps it is better to be born free and die free. We mourn for the little one as we marvel at the wonders of nature.
Hello Paul,
Thanks for your query, and you have my admiration for persevering. We know very well how tough your job is, including dealing with an anxious public.
Our policy with our Bird Cams project is essentially “just say no” to pleas for interference. The behavior you are witnessing – while seemingly cruel and heartless to us – is natural for many kinds of birds, especially those that feed on variable, unpredictable food supplies. The little nestling does have a chance to survive, but if it does not then that result was “meant to be” by the nature of Osprey breeding strategy. The wonderful things about these nest cameras also sometimes yield the difficult things for us to watch. As you might know, we actually post a “siblicide alert” on some of our cams where we suspect the possibility exists.
I’m copying your note to Charles Eldermire, project leader for our Bird Cams. He may have some additional comments, and he would be the one to ask if we might be able to use your stored files for biological analysis.
Best wishes, and good luck,
John W. Fitzpatrick
Director, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
It’s also important to acknowledge that intervening can also cause problems of its own—depending on the ages of the birds in the nest, disturbing them can trigger an early fledge. We have restricted the scenarios in which we would even consider intervening to injuries or dangers that are explicitly human-derived. For example, 3 or 4 years ago we were alerted by viewers that one of the osprey chicks at the Hellgate Osprey nest was entangled in monofilament line. We consulted with our partners there (wildlife biologists, raptor researchers, raptor rehabbers) to determine if the monofilament was an issue, and if intervening was both likely to solve the issue AND not have bad effects on the other nestlings. In the end, a quick trip to the nest was scheduled via a bucket truck, the monofilament was removed, and the nestlings all eventually fledged. In that case, all of the permits were already in hand to be studying the ospreys, and we had already discussed how to approach issues in the nest.
Good luck to the young one—hope it all turns out well.
charles.

I’ve been to your site—great cam! And I noticed the runt in the nest. This is just normal Osprey reproduction. It happens all the time and you should not intervene. It’s tough to watch, but it’s how nature works. Ospreys almost always lay 3 eggs and on average fledge between 1 and 1.5 young each year. They stagger the hatch so there is a spread of ages in the young. That way, if food is short, the first-hatched (and therefore largest) will get enough food to survive while the smaller nest mates do not. If all three young were the same size and there was only enough food for 1 young, none of the young would get enough food and they would all die. If there’s lots of food, the smallest will eventually get fed and can survive. These nest cams can show some gut-wrenching scenes. The most infamous perhaps was one of the very first Osprey cams (on Long Island somewhere), where the smallest young died. One of the adults carried it out of the nest and after several minutes flew back into the nest and fed it to the other young. Waste-not-want-not at its goriest. At Hog Island up in Maine just last week a Bald Eagle came in and took the young out of the nest. Last year at another nest, cameras documented a Great-horned Owl taking young Ospreys out of a nest in NJ or MD. All of these things have been going on for millions of years and Ospreys are doing fine.

@7:20….Solar flies in, accompanied by the sun fairies…………just beating George to the nest…
Just wanted to thank Carol V for her comment on my naming Eclipse. So sweet of you.
Eclipse’s turn……..
Gracious, as always, accepting his fish
Happy Eclipse!
and out he goes……………
minutes later, Solar goes
Labor Day and George is working hard! Since I’m late posting and the names have been announced (YAY!) I’m gonna try to keep this correct……………….
SOLAR #1 flies in @05:46
06:11…Incoming!
Osprey hug!
George handing it over
Eclipse#2 comes in minutes later to start the haunting
I just want to thank everyone who voted for Solar and Eclipse. I never thought I would win. Just want to say don’t forget to wear your glasses guys. LOl Wow, still can’t be believe it! Again thank you so much.
CONGRATULATIONS, to all who voted on Solar & Eclipse
In honor of their names, the solar eclipse…
Took this on my phone and the eclipse didn’t show on the sun….I believe the tiny thumbnail to the left and down (about 8o’clock) is the actual eclipse. You can also see a plane that was circling. And a contrail thru the beautiful clouds that day…..
I’m having trouble posting, just like we did with page 65….resorting to alternate email addresses again………………
Noticed this effect on my phone camera before during flash shots.. A ghost image shows away from the surface of what I’m shooting
Family Tree
Guess we’re not counting Eggbert??
9-5-17 Reply- CarolV, sorry CarolV I forgot Eggbert will always be a part of Season 3
RJ
With names of the babies being officially tabulated and the votes counted and no one contesting the results I propose that and official portrait of Solar and Eclipse be commissioned. With all the talented artisans in attendance on this site can come up with a painting of both babies and another of the entire Family.
And by incorporating their names as the theme of the portrait I think we as a Group can come up with a First Class Project
here is the pic I posted
9-5-17 Micheal G.Martin Betsy is the one who usually makes the portraits every year.
9-13-17 Reply- Micheal G. Martin please see current page 89 I made a quick pic per your request.
Love the family tree- what a great idea!!

9-3-17 8:00am Still voting for Blondie and Brownie ! Happy Labor Day to all!
9-3-17 Reply- Patty K I still have you there.
Happy Labor Day to You!
Harvey remains passing over tonight. Rains(sprinkling now) may be heavy at times, with possible 1nch total. May last thru morning. Temps low 60s, with wind gusts of 25mph possible.
Brownie hung around in the nest after Blondie flew upstairs. He flew out eventually and nest was empty. I checked and someone was back in nest about 10 mins, ago-(9pm now)
RODEE…thanks for pointing out that video. Brownie was stealing Blondie’s fish for a while but she’s gotten wise to his techniques! She usually only gives up a fish if she’s done with it anyway…..
Funny, I was just catching up on the comments I’ve scanned thru the past few days and said to myself…why didn’t I mention the chest spots to Rodee? then I worked up to your comment!
Thanks for the clarification, Rjoneal; no offense taken. I guess it was just my wishful thinking.
aww Theresa B thank you for understanding and being so kind, we are like brothers and sisters in one big family, a family of Osprey Lovers. Take care have a good weekend
REMINDER- Monday on September 4 THE BABY NAMING WINNER CHOICES WILL BE POSTED
No need to vote on Monday 9-4-17 that vote will not count.
I will count all the votes that get posted if any over the weekend. However please keep in mind it is a Holiday weekend and some people might be taking the Holiday off so we might not get any comments posted over the weekend.
A Big Thank You to Paul and Aidan who have worked with Shelli,Nita and I during this time of Naming the Babies, we could not make this happen if it was not for your help.
September 6th…..Full Corn Moon…..3:03 am
Full Corn Moon or Full Harvest Moon – September This full moon’s name is attributed to Native Americans because it marked when corn was supposed to be harvested. Most often, the September full moon is actually the Harvest Moon, which is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October. At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon. Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the Moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans, and wild rice the chief Indian staples are now ready for gathering.
Really cool night ahead! Low 50s by 4a,m, ish…….61 now at 8:30. Only high 60s tomorrow with rain coming overnight into Sunday. Warming gradually for the next few days after that.
Our beautiful babies no matter what we name them <3
17:46…….George getting mobbed again.

Blocking is illegal? Since when?
There’s Dad!
WHOA! WHOA!
Blondie beats out Brownie…………..
Brownie tells off Blondie………….
After trying and failing at his old slide around the nest and take the fish, Brownie went for the run and grab attack to get the fish.
Blondie eying “her” fish……..
then trying but failing to get it back…………
9-1-17 Not Gracie it is George at the Nest
Gracie flew back to the nest today at 12:40 p.m. and stayed for 12 minutes. No one in the nest to greet her.
Sorry Theress that was George not Gracie. Wishful thinking maybe.
Theress B -Please keep posting we all make mistakes and I want you to feel welcomed but maybe say I think it is Gracie if you are not for sure. Some of us are taking records of time and events.
You may take this wrong and I am sorry if you do because I truly do not mean for this to be mean, ugly or negative in any way.
I myself just made a mistake last week posting baby caught 1st fish lucky I realized it was incorrect so I posted immediately I was wrong.
Hope my words do not discourage you from posting and staying part of the OZ Family.
Love My Osprey Family & Followers
I thought it was Gracie at first but this was just as the jump up to perch was made—no dot on side…..note the dot on chest…..
here’s George later with that dot.
9-1-17 As much as I hate to do it I am going to change my vote to solar and eclipse.
I really liked the names breeze & spirit but there’s no chance it’s going to win so I am going to put my vote where it has a chance to win on 🤗 solar & eclipse after all this was the year.
Good luck everyone it’s almost over soon our 🐣babies will have a name.
Rjoneal, thanks for your work on this!
JanL You are Welcome, some don’t realize all the time I put into doing all my silly little Osprey contest but I do it to keep everyone interested and involved so we have a part of us that will always be The George & Gracie Osprey Family. I just love this couple and as I have said before I have osprey family living in my backyard. The 1st time I saw Gracie and George I fell in love with them both. Ospreys look very different in their markings and necklaces and crowns on head. Our Gracie does not stand out to have the deep dark necklace like a lot of female ospreys do. But this is one of the things I love about her. G&Gs personalities and they way we got to watch them bond year after year watching them grow to experience Osprey Parents just makes you love them even more. The most thing that stuck out for me was when Gracie’s instinct to ration the food the year of fish Kill even to George who did not know better so he brought the whole fish in and waited his turn.
Take care
local thief makes a quick get away with his prize……………..
also crow
Nice pic Carol. I was watching then too, and here’s mine; I wonder: did the crow think that black plastic-stuff flapping the wind was one of ‘his buddies’ from a distance? lol. He didn’t stay long!
Ah, an edit: black plastic stuff flapping “in” the wind. 🙂
What surprised me was he was solo! So used to see them in groups…
As I was leaving work, there was a bunch of them mobbing another crow who was carrying something. They harassed him till he dropped it and another one caught it in mid-air! Was some show of skill! Then it looked like they were turning to go after the new “carrier”.. I was wondering if it was a game……………..there are dozens of crow families hanging around our parking lot. Maybe practice for needed skills when they are on their own………..
Gracie flew in about 12:40 p.m. today and left 12 minutes later at 12:52. No one in the nest to welcome her.

I just want to add that Earhart and Eclipse were my misunderstanding when I posted on facebook….I mistakenly thought we would be able to choose individual names not just pairs. The suggestion for ECLIPSE was made by DORIS in her nomination.
I apologize for my misunderstanding and poorly communicated efforts.
I posted it here, too. Total fudge up
I asked this last year and I will ask again… There is a Facebook page for OZ? I have been here from the start and have heard others elude to it but no one seems to let anyone know how to see it. I can’t find it on FB. Sad to not have been a part of it.
Gina M at the very top of the page right under Aidans message you will see a picture of the two babies from Shelli and she has the Facebook link to click on.
The Facebook is not run by Paul Henry or Osprey zone The Administrators are Nita Roper and Shelli who runs the Facebook page.
You have to request an invite and once they except you you will be part of their Facebook Followers for George&Gracie.
I do not do Facebook so I’m sorry if you requested this info in the past but because I don’t do Facebook it wasn’t until this season I met Nita and Shelli.
I hope this info helps you I really miss talking with you Gina. We have had a great three years very successful so far compared to others. If you do decide to go to Facebook next season please check in with me and you will always be part of our Osprey Zone Family.

WTR97 makes another great video for us to enjoy
RODEE— Chick #1 “Blondie” hatch 6/5/17- 12:23pm
……………..Chick #2 “Brownie” hatch 6/7/17 was there when sun came up
IN RESPONSE TO CAROL…….
You did a very good description of the birds. Have you also noticed that Blondie has a lot of dark markings on the chest – and Brownie only has a few faint ones on the left, just above the left foot. PLEASE, don’t miss the video that WTR97 made. IT IS HILARIOUS. I was fortunate to watch it as it happened.
If you have ever bet on a horse, that is exciting. Here too, the fever is rising and the excitement is building. I am glad I am well enough to sit for longer time now and experience the final solution and the end of this most enjoyable 3rd season. These two sibling were always well behaved, right from the beginning and the parents are like no others. Who can resist falling in love with them? Even R. Beergard (spelling) had made some remarks a long while ago. And all that in near distance from me.
While I have your attention……….. Is there any hope of another luncheon????????? And Carol , if so, you will show up, please. Rodee
I vote for Solar and Eclipse.
9-1-17 Reply- Tom I have added your name to the list thanks
I did scrollback a minute or so too late. Blondie has a fish which I’m guessing George delivered.
@8:14am…Brownie races to nest to be there for fish delivery…..RODEE–I imagine someone will answer you in depth; jic- Brownie is chick#2
This is probably Blondie racing by as she landed seconds later……Brownie took off with his fish…….Blondie waited in nest for more than 1/2 hr. to see if deliveryman returned
@9:16am, Blondie gets headless fish from George…………..
Blondie took her fish to go
Posted a pic of Blondie getting fish @9:16 but came up as dup comment—hope it fills in…..

Several followers have changed their vote and that is fine to do, If you want to change your vote and I see your name on a different choice I delete from previous and put on new choice.
WE HAD HOPED TO POST TODAY THE TOP 6 NAME 3 from FB and 3 form us, Facebook needed more time to dwindle down their list they were at 10 names still.
There might be a Delay on BABY NAME ANNOUNCEMENT WINNER.

FOR SHELLI SIMON
WOW, that is altogether a different arrangement of the two sibs side by side – each with a meal in their talons, facing the same way. I just LOVED it. And the frame makes it definitely a portrait for the mantel. There are many wonderful photos, but this one caught my eye. I am glad you shared this special moment. Thank you.
And here we are near the end of the season and I am thrilled finally to identify the two. THE BLACK STRIPE DOWN BLONDIES NOSE TO BILL IS A SURE ID. Better late than never.
Still one question remains for me. Was Blondie FIRST BORN? Rodee
Rodee feel free to go to Facebook we’re Shelli &Nita are. Facebook is completely different then this site.
They have lots of pics there from their followers.
Obviously you are doing much better since you have been posting a lot. I tried to keep you updated while you were out for surgery and Chemo as much as I could.

Hello Osprey Lovers
Can anyone give me the dates when our Family left for their Winter Home in the Tropics I have a new theory I’m working on as to what might prompt them to decide to pack up a leave, it must be nice to be able to bask in the warm Sun. I myself am insanely jealous of the Four of them
Lastly, can I vote twice in the baby naming extravaganza
Mike
9-1-17 Micheal G Martin our family is still here they have not left yet for migration. No dates to give yet.
Micheal G. Martin – No you can not vote 2x unless your first choice did not make into the top 3 Names or if you want to change your vote at anytime you can request the change.
Right now I show your vote on Blondie & Brownie but you can change it if you like, just post to me.

Gracie is still around … she dropped off a fish at 16:07 which chick #1 got.
Glad to hear!
9-1-17 Betsy I saw George are you sure it was Gracie, just saying my observation. I have pics that show Geo maybe double check that.
Rjoneal: Check picture with CarolV’s August 30, 2017 at 8:22 pm comment (caption: 16:07-Dad brought her fish….)
That’s Gracie in the picture!!
I’m re-posting CarolV’s picture
9-3-17 Betsy that is Gracie Not George, CarolV just made a mistake. I am surprised you both don’t go blind as much as you 2 get to watch. It is a good thing though since this year I have not been able to watch non- stop like always in previous years. You 2 ladies keep all of us updated.
I just wish more of our followers would have posted more this Season.
9-3-17 Reply- Betsy I never saw this pic but it is Gracie no doubt. I am sure CarolV just made a typo or something.
Rjoneal: I wasn’t commenting on Carol’s mix-up. I was replying to your reply to me that you saw George at the time I noted that Gracie was at the nest and you asked if I was sure it was Gracie. I used the picture CarolV had posted to illustrate that it was Gracie.
9-5-17 Betsy got it I will try find pic of Geo that I was referring too. Just so I can double ck my records thanks for clarifying.
9-3-17 Betsy you spotted her no one else did this day, I have pics of Geo but I did not have this pic that CarolV posted it is Gracie. Last year she left 9-2-16 and since she relocated extra early I am wondering if that was her last appearance. Geo seems to have the behavior that she is gone for about 1-2 days now so I do not know if we will see her again. If you do please take pic and post. Thanks for clearing up.
George came to the nest at 5:17 pm with a partial fish …
Just as he landed, chick #2 hopped down from the perch …
Landing squarely on George …
And then going head over “heels” …
Both of them becoming one mess of feathers and wings
After righting themselves, George flew away …
And, chick #2 got the fish.
I vote for Solar and Eclipse
8-31-17 Reply-JoAnn Thank you for posting and you have been added to the list.
The sibs looking well-fed and gorgeous! And deserving of uniquely special names!
Everything looking rosy at the nest………and Brownie having a good stretch……………
9-1-17 Carol I got the same pose they just starred out into the water thinking about their childhood days in the nest and now how it is almost time to part ways for life.
@17:17- George has been in a couple times with this fish. Blondie tells him she’s busy………..
only this time, Brownie barrels in, landing on George………
can’t tell where one osprey ends and the other begins!
,falls over George’s head………
now he spots Blondie’s fish and makes a move for it….no go….
..finally spots the fish George just left and goes for it!!!!!
George high-tailed it out of there a.s.a.p.! Muttering “Crazy teens!”
@15:49–Blondie came in for fish…………..
This is what she got…………
FISH!!! Please………….
16:07-Dad brought her fish….
and of course, Blondie had to re-do George’s placement, later @ 17:52
Gracie!!
I still think that’s George. Has dot on chest- which may be scale or schmutz – that he still has today..9/1/17. Dot on side is on wrong side for Gracie
Name the Babies: Breeze and Spirit
8-31-17 Hi Becky I have added you name to list love your choices.
I vote for SOLAR & ECLIPSE….thanks
8-31-17 gracey thanks for joining in I have added your names to the list.
Has any of the babies actually gotten their own fish? I feel I may have missed it 🙁
CaROL AND OTHERS ……….Thanks, Carol ….. I see now clearly that Blondie has that dark stripe down her nose to bill . It would be great to see them next to each other from the back so to compare the back of their heads. And I don’t know which of the two was born first???? I do not read every e-mail, too much for me to do now. So, please, someone set me straight. Thanks, Rodee
Really nice timing on that! Love the light…………
Sorry, RENEE WOLF, this comment was for your 12:20 post of Chick#1 with the sun behind her…..
8-30-17 Loved the backdrop as the sun is trying to show itself as chick 1 eats a big fish-which that George brought in for them..
Me too love it !
ALL OZ FOLLOWERS- Just wanted to share an easy way to identify our Ospreys from other birds of Prey that seem similar in the air by first glance but as you can see very different during flight. Some of the Ospreys are already heading out to migrate so are other birds. If you dont hear them make any sound here is a chart to help identify what birds are flying overhead.
KEEP YOUR EYES TO THE SKY you might just see an Osprey
Love Our Osprey Family & Followers
A little squaller this morning
Hi Nita thanks for posting your picture love to have you with us.
Wed morning 8/30: Looks like the kids are still waiting for Mom & Dad to deliver meals……hope they learn this vital life lesson soon !
Hang on Texas it will get better we are thinking of you!
Prayers for all the flood victims …………May better days dawn for you all…………the only positive from this mess is the way so many have pitched in any way they can……..as bad as the disaster pictures are, what brought me to tears was the shots of the long line of cars with boats on trailers heading IN to the area. God bless them all………
8-31-17 Well said CarolV, so devastating so many lives, animals, nature, have been lost, so hard to watch. One hour One day at a time and hopefully it will be less painful.
Sandra Bullock said a wonderful thing the other day ( There are no politics in 8 feet of water there are human beings in 8 feet of water ) and she donated 1 million to Red Cross.

Hi, Rjoneal, since this is was the year of the total eclipse of the sun, I’d like to vote for Solar and Eclipse. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Not to mention Paul and Tommy, who share their osprey family with all of us, and also to Aidan, for monitoring our comments. They have brought a lot of enjoyment to thousands of Gracie and George fans.
Hi Marlen it has been a while since I have seen you post or I might just have missed it, miss you, glad you are still watching and glad you are part of the osprey family. Your name choices were added and your vote counted on the update posted 8-31-17 thanks and take care
oops sorry Marlene I misspelled your name sorry 🙂
I had posted recently about the Verizon nest by my job. I thought the female and one juvie were gone. Well, today everyone was home! Male on his post and 3 in nest. So unless they had relatives over, Vera and their two kids were on the nest and Vic on his pole.
When I was leaving work last ight, there was the clean-up squad of crows on the nest and the pole. That gave me such a feeling of fall, because they don’t usually dare to spend that kind of time at the nest when the osprey are fully in residence. So it made me happy to see the family there and all at the same time!
BETSY–thanks for getting back to me about Gracie, 2015. I’m just curious, but does anyone recollect Gracie’s departure date for 2015?
Betsy–I had trouble with the kids that year! I don’t know if I ever got them separated!
CarolV: Too bad I didn’t know about the site from the beginning that year (2015) … I could have made my ID comparison pictures!! 😀 😀 😀
Carol I posted for you below
It’s gonna be a rainy night, tapering off toward 6-7am…..windy, too, with gusts possible of 30mph. temps. 62-63, warming to mid 70s tomorrow, with clearing to sun late afternoon.
It looked like the nest was empty late afternoon. Blondie popped in and out this evening. About 18:50 she jumped to perch.
Just adding this for you, Rodee, so you can see the back of Blondie’s head……….
In case you haven’t seen them yet, posted face and head views by your original comment-8/28 @7:59……
Thank you so much to Rjoneal and Betsy and CarolV and so so many others for all of your postings and pictures. I have not been able to watch the nest as much this year and it means so much to me to read all your comments and catch up on all of the activities of our wonderful Osprey family. George and Gracie are the best parents any little Osprey could hope for and they have done a fabulous job again this year. So again, thank you everyone and especially to Tommy, Paul, and Aiden for making all of this possible!!
Glad we made you happy! And we do owe it all to Tommy&Christine, Paul and Aidan!
Ginger G thanks you for your kind words. We love our Osprey Family but I did not see your name entered for the BABY NAMING VOTE? Do you want to vote just pick one of the 3 Choices and post it.
Glad you we can all share something that makes everyone smile or even laugh a lil.
I will vote for Blondie and Brownie. Thanks.
Nice to still see them!
