Belle’s Journey
Written by Dr. Rob Bierregaard & Illustrated by Kate Garchinsky
Take flight with Belle, an osprey born on Martha’s Vineyard as she learns to fly and migrates for the first time to Brazil and back–a journey of more than 8,000 miles.
IMPORTANT: Messages from osprey experts
I haven’t seen the little guy yet this morning, but I would be very surprised if he survived the night. That sure was tough to watch yesterday, but that whole process is as much a part of the essence of being an Osprey as is eating a fish. It’s part of the life of Ospreys that was rarely seen before we started putting cameras in nests. As hard as it is, we should not label the behavior as mean or cruel. Being mean or cruel implies that there is intent to do harm just for harm’s sake. Those young were responding to a set of stimuli (very little food being delivered to the nest and the presence of a very small young) in a way that evolution has hard-wired into them. It helps ensure their survival. Nature is not cruel. It is harsh, unforgiving, and often random (had the little guy been born 1st, he would have been just as aggressive as was his sibling), but not cruel or mean.

Thanks Rob for bringing your knowledge and experience to help us all gain perspective here. We are all saddened by the events that unfolded before our eyes and it’s only natural for all of us to feel and express our emotions appropriately. There have been many issues pertaining to intervention which have been discussed amongst us all. There is no doubt in my mind that the right decision was made, to let nature take it’s course. By the way, that doesn’t equate to heartless, on the contrary, nobody feels worse about this then the apparent decision makers. I say apparent, because when all was said and done, and all the issues were properly weighed, there really weren’t any other options. It was clearly pointed out, by experts, that intervening at this stage could have spooked the whole nest to the point of losing all the young. If the little one was saved, and nursed back to health, what kind of a life would it have had, perhaps caged up in a zoo. I remember when I was younger I saw a golden eagle in captivity, caged behind a wire mesh. I could practically see it’s tears. As far as placing the little one in another nest, such a low probability of success would never have justified the possibility of spooking the nest. There’s a piece of me, however heavy hearted, that believes that perhaps it is better to be born free and die free. We mourn for the little one as we marvel at the wonders of nature.
Hello Paul,
Thanks for your query, and you have my admiration for persevering. We know very well how tough your job is, including dealing with an anxious public.
Our policy with our Bird Cams project is essentially “just say no” to pleas for interference. The behavior you are witnessing – while seemingly cruel and heartless to us – is natural for many kinds of birds, especially those that feed on variable, unpredictable food supplies. The little nestling does have a chance to survive, but if it does not then that result was “meant to be” by the nature of Osprey breeding strategy. The wonderful things about these nest cameras also sometimes yield the difficult things for us to watch. As you might know, we actually post a “siblicide alert” on some of our cams where we suspect the possibility exists.
I’m copying your note to Charles Eldermire, project leader for our Bird Cams. He may have some additional comments, and he would be the one to ask if we might be able to use your stored files for biological analysis.
Best wishes, and good luck,
John W. Fitzpatrick
Director, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
It’s also important to acknowledge that intervening can also cause problems of its own—depending on the ages of the birds in the nest, disturbing them can trigger an early fledge. We have restricted the scenarios in which we would even consider intervening to injuries or dangers that are explicitly human-derived. For example, 3 or 4 years ago we were alerted by viewers that one of the osprey chicks at the Hellgate Osprey nest was entangled in monofilament line. We consulted with our partners there (wildlife biologists, raptor researchers, raptor rehabbers) to determine if the monofilament was an issue, and if intervening was both likely to solve the issue AND not have bad effects on the other nestlings. In the end, a quick trip to the nest was scheduled via a bucket truck, the monofilament was removed, and the nestlings all eventually fledged. In that case, all of the permits were already in hand to be studying the ospreys, and we had already discussed how to approach issues in the nest.
Good luck to the young one—hope it all turns out well.
charles.

I’ve been to your site—great cam! And I noticed the runt in the nest. This is just normal Osprey reproduction. It happens all the time and you should not intervene. It’s tough to watch, but it’s how nature works. Ospreys almost always lay 3 eggs and on average fledge between 1 and 1.5 young each year. They stagger the hatch so there is a spread of ages in the young. That way, if food is short, the first-hatched (and therefore largest) will get enough food to survive while the smaller nest mates do not. If all three young were the same size and there was only enough food for 1 young, none of the young would get enough food and they would all die. If there’s lots of food, the smallest will eventually get fed and can survive. These nest cams can show some gut-wrenching scenes. The most infamous perhaps was one of the very first Osprey cams (on Long Island somewhere), where the smallest young died. One of the adults carried it out of the nest and after several minutes flew back into the nest and fed it to the other young. Waste-not-want-not at its goriest. At Hog Island up in Maine just last week a Bald Eagle came in and took the young out of the nest. Last year at another nest, cameras documented a Great-horned Owl taking young Ospreys out of a nest in NJ or MD. All of these things have been going on for millions of years and Ospreys are doing fine.

I found this on internet so for all those who are doing the color pencils, markers,or color pens on adult de-stressing color art here is something fun to color. Enjoy 🙂
Thanks! But won’t that ruin my computer screen?
Just kidding- looks like it would be fun…
9-20-17 Solar begs after not getting a fish,Solar comes to nest all wet but no fish, waits for daddy to deliver.
Rjoneal..A Thank you to you for al the specialty pictures you have done this season…beautiful
Didn’t forget you Betsy..Thank You
CarolV..Thank you for day after day giving us photos of the day…I know it takes time..just to let you know its appreciated…
Thanks! It keeps me out of trouble!
Morning, Solar! More wind today, with maybe an occasional shower….
The wind is kicking up and the surf is showing it……..Beach erosion is the major problem foreseen from this storm. The new moon adds to tidal changes, so wind gusts to 40mph will cause erosion, especially along the South Fork and ocean beaches.
Solar seems to be staying down in nest….was there well after dark, past 9pm. Good-night, Sunshine….
Wait….for ME!?
@18:16- George evens the score with another fish for Eclipse…
E heard about that fish-sleigh game and waits for someone to pull him….Hello? Anyone? Any huskies nearby???
And E is out…..gone with the weed…………….
@17:47– A fish magically appears…………..
Solar says..”I got it!”
Getting crowded here!
Where you goin’?
Solar looking a bit damp………….
Jose sat off shore over the ocean. Bands of rain rolled through much of the day, sometimes torrential. Even got a spot of sunshine, then more rain.
@16:13- George “hands” over a fish..
………and goes…….
.as does Eclipse.
15:26–
Got to see busy George on his afternoon deliveries………..Came in on right to a waiting Solar
She pulled the fish 1/2 way across the nest with George standing on it!
I think he enjoyed the ride!
And awaaaayyy we goooo!
….dragging her weeds behind her………..
At approximately 5:45 and 6:20 this evening, George caught two fish for each of his hungry offspring. I can’t imagine how difficult it must’ve been, with the strong winds from Tropical Storm Jose. He certainly is a wonderful father. It’s probably best that the three of them did not leave yet, because of this storm and possibly Maria. But, I think that this time last year they had all flown the coop. Hopefully, they’ll get out of here before it’s very cold weather. Fall is just a couple of days away! I’d like to think that Gracie is relaxing in South America, having taken such good care of here babies. She deserves a rest.
Seems as though Jose storm is visiting soon(Tues Sept 19) Hope all is well. In NC we still have our fingers AND our toes crossed. Paradises down far south have
played hell this season.
I’m watching the news as I type and am grateful Jose has been weakened as it approaches LI. The current forecast is for the storm to sit in the ocean and possibly loop on itself, giving us bad weather for a few days. But not only are the newscasters talking about Maria devastating the Caribbean islands, they also are telling of the devastation in Mexico from the earthquake. I’ll take Jose over those choices.
Thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by these disasters, as well as those still suffering and recovering from Humphrey and Irma. Thank you for your concern, DarDar. We wish you well, too.
Another night in the nest with her midnight snack
That mysterious light is back, shining up to the nest.
It’s from the patio lights down below.
I’m not so sure. The patio lights are often on and much brighter at times.and the birds are not illuminated like this This light seems to come from a source either aimed toward the nest or emanating from a source closer in height to the nest.
18:51- Eclipse is singing now!
Eclipse rushes George offsides.
Solar drags her fish over, then eyes Eclipses fish even as she straddles her own!
@19:05…..Solar is not happy about someone being on the perch………………
FISH! FISH!! FISH!!
Nice one, Dad!
Solar singing….” If you’re happy and you know it, flap your wings…………”
So funny!! When do we want fish? Now!! Lol! Thx for all the pics. I didn’t watch that much early in the season. Very frustrating, seems every time I looked they were off to the far right! When they got bigger and couldn’t hide anymore, started watching again.
This did not post under pic I wanted. Fish! Fish!! Fish!!
Sorry- when I run pics in a stream it’s hard to post directly under some. Love your cheer!
I know your frustrating! And lately, Solar seems to favor that no-see spot!
That was supposed to be frustraTION! YOU are not frustrating! I spot these things in that second between hitting POST and the comment going into the computer-sphere and would so love to have a recall button!!! {:+))
I knew what you meant ,but thx for the reply. A recall button, imagine the possibilities! Lol!
CarolV thanks for all the weather and nest updates over the past couple of days. As you know been busy rebuilding and thanks to you I dont feel like I missed to much.
Take care
A whole lot of noise! For about 5-10 mins. or more…………… Heard them when I was in basement….
Maybe George nearby? Having his share of a fish?
Eclipse is on the perch.
STEREO! OH-am I shouting?
CarolV, you don’t have to “screenshot” the instructions. You can highlight what you want to save directly from the website, then select copy, go to a new document in Word, or whichever word processing program you have, right click again and select paste. After you paste that information into your Word program, you can go back and copy and paste something else, e.g. RJONEAL’S instructions, and add it to the same document, then print it. Of course, you can first name and save that document, if you like. I believe that when you take a “screenshot”, you see everything that is on your screen at that moment, not just what you want to copy and, if you print it out, you will use up your ink a whole lot faster.
Sorry- you’re speaking another language….will screen shot that and figure out later…….yeah, I’m hopeless……..most of what I know…I was gonna say self-taught but would be a lie…most of what I know about computers I stumbled in to…….and then wouldn’t be sure how I did it! Trial and error…
Does anyone else see a face between these wings?
OMG!!! I do
I feel better! That’s two out of a bunch of people I’ve asked!
@13:44- Solar doing her fish dance…………..
George brings her fish…………
Eclipse charges in,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Solar makes clear it’s HERS!
Eclipse goes up to perch……………
Solar takes her fish to go….must have felt eyes on her back……………
Solar came back to nest, checking all around…………………
First, you could hear the screeching. Then the Kamikaze Kid flew full tilt into Solar, knocking her off balance and the fish out of her grip; stumbled to side and flew out……………..
The KK takes his prize and goes…………………….at least Solar had a big portion of it.
And I have to correct….that was George who was rammed by Eclipse….he had his share before he brought it in……..once again, a victim to assuming!!!
MaryAnne, who posted on fb, had it right and sent me back to look again…………..
Hi Shelli, here’s one for you from yesterday I think
Chicks face is too funny!
Shock and awe!
Hi Nita thanks for posting your pic and sharing.
THERESA AND RJONEAL– I’ve screenshot both of your instructions on saving pictures and will probably print. Then, I’ll give it a try when not so busy. Hope the site stays open long enough this fall. THANKS!
Whatever works for you CarolV 🙂
The kids are making so much racket that between them and the wind, my eardrums are suffering! Don’t want to turn down sound in case a fish finally gets delivered. Bad weather or tough love?
Eclipse rushes out, screeching as he goes………….
Solar holds down the fort……..
Here’s one for you CarolV!! George flew in with seaweed but Solar thought it was a fish and dove in headfirst – literally!!
I’m sorry I missed that! TY
Odd. I put the computer down and must have hit something….when I came back, it was on page 55, July 13. 16. So I went back thru my photos to find a shot from that day. There were a lot of smeary shots–the kids must have been in their POOPCASO period. Anyhow, liked this fairly clear family portait to share.
BOB- Glad to hear from you and that you pulled thru fairly well. Must have been terrifying. TY for checking in. Amazing how palm trees have adapted to life in these tropical storms! When I see them being transplanted on some landscaping show, they seem to have so few root. Yet they hold on!
JACKIE BUDRIS– The only time the nest was cleared was between the ’15-’16 seasons, when the height of the tower was dropped from 80′ to 60’………they leave it as natural.
CarolV: Sweet picture!!
We’ve all heard about the birds and the bees!
Carol: Good one!! 😀 😀
Solar is 15 weeks old today
Wonder if we will see her next week………………
On the one hand I hope so, but on the other they need to fly the coop!!
My feelings exactly!
Thanks for keeping up with their ages and posting pic.
Solar flies out, too.
They weren’t out long. Solar is picking around for scraps and there’s a yapper up above.
Lazybones finally jumps down. Sounds like Eclipse still on perch
Looks like Eclipse is going for a run…………..
The day slowly awakes……………….showers early this a.m. Supposed to be overcast, temps low 70s. Rain to start about midnight. The week looks a little better with rain icons only on Tu. & Wed. Always subject to change.
…………There’s a monster down below……………..shussshhhhhhhh……………….
Ready for Halloween!! Looks like a happy monster!!
Too funny CarolV love the pic,I agree w Betsy it does look like Halloween jack-o-lantern
Solar finally steps out of the right and pecks around nest before flying out……………
Eclipse pops right down from above to grab a fishtail he prob had an eye on…………..
Eclipse jumps down for that abandoned fish…………..
…checks the neighborhood………..
….heads off into the wild blue…………..
@16:37-George comes in……….
….with a flippin’ fish! as in lively………..
Solar accepts it……
Thanks, Dad…..BYE!
Glloooooooomy sky…………..just a passing cloud. No showers in forecast tonight. They have added possible showers in the a.m. tomorrow….making it a complete week of little raincloud icons on my app…………mid 0s tonight, overcast……..
that’s 60s
@15:22- George arrives with a headless fish and no one wants it……Solar still working on last one.
Leaves it for back-up…………..
@13:45….the Shadow deliver’s a fish right to Solar, offsides and still eating..Eclipse charges in and grabs it.
Hello, Handsome! E spends a little time admiring the view………..
After about 10 mins., Eclipse exits
Solar wanted equal time to look gorgeous in her portrait……….
@1:00- Here, fishy, fishy……………………..
Dad delivers……………
nice BIG one!
This was a fighter, but Solar has gotten better at holding on………..
I need an eraser lately……………sorry……………..try one more…..
I’m making so many mistakes today! And I ‘m not drinking! Maybe I should!
SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE, enjoy – I found this pic on SF Golden Gate Bridge osprey site by a follower
Wow! must work at Starbucks!
9-17-17 Today Eclipse, Baby2 takes fish fr Geo and gets a lil tangled in black plastic but manages to fly off w fish.
and….
then…
and …
…..
And finally
Home free …
Here is a better view
Here’s one to add to the collection … I like the wings here!!
And, here!!
tks
I love that we can all watch the same thing and post different versions; in that, our pictures slightly different, so we cover the whole scene!
09:56– sat in nest for a few minutes, chirping quietly—
….shot a poop…………….
….and left…………….
Gracie left but her work lives on…….E gets hung up on that last bit of plastic……………
……UH-OH!
LOOK OUT BELOW !
I’M OK! I’M FINE! phew!……..
That’s Eclipse………..
@9:48- George brought a fish to Eclipse.
Not doing well—again-G-fish-E
NO TOOTSIES!
The day is slowly clearing. Temps mid 70s. Sun to make an appearance during the p.m. And did I mention? It’s gonna be MUGGY! Muggy used to be the code word for a few weeks in August, with the high temps for the summer. This year we got a few weeks of high temps in July and muggy from then on. no matter what the temp! 80s now 70s and Muggy………..bah!
Monday to be cloudy and then rain symbols Tu-Sat on my weather app. Not the best way to end summer………….maybe they’re wrong? {That would be a shocker!}
WOW! Was I off on that photo post! Hopefully right one below
It’s a foggy morning at the OZ
Solar dropped from perch to pose………..
and go………………
8:09- Eclipse drops in……………
Laser vision spotted some dried up crumb across the nest; he ferretted it out and left.
Had to say hi to the camera as he marched around yapping
2017 family portrait
I just realized I didn’t put © and sponsorship info
Very pretty!
Thanks Betsy! Very tastefully done……..
Gorgeous frame and pic portrait you made Betsy.

9-18-17 Reply-Theresa thank you for posting info I did post info to Micheal G.Martin below as well both minds think alike. Take care
George flies in straight to Solar with a fish…..she seemed to still be working on her last on, but of course, she accepted it.
And Eclipse is right behind! He stayed briefly, then flew out. As did George
Solar finally walks away from that right corner. She gets snagged in the plastic but kicked it off.
You can see a fish at right by edge of nest.
Eclipse jumps down from the perch to clean up……….
Solar made a move back to the corner, but she got rebuffed. So she heads out and around to perch.
Eclipse heads out with his last chunk of fish.
@16:44- Solar sings in George
George’s toes are intact…..
She sat for a while, gazing out over the water….is she looking for Eclipse? I am……….
Finally starting to dismantle the fish but not that hungry. Eventually moves to porch…..
Need a cuteness fix?
6/25/17- Peaceful family–typical new parents! Napping while they can.! See Eggbert? Snuggled in with the kids…..
Watching lunch come in……………
Mind the toes please! ( Is George sounding a little British?)
Watching Dad go…..she was doing little wing flutters, almost like the adult females when they are asking to be fed…..was a little sad.
heading right………………..
…right out of the frame! All we saw of the feeding……..
And awaaayyy she goes…….
Sorry….here she goes….
Remember those little wings?????
Too bad she doesn’t eat those bugs!
” Fluffy”–
Solar sat for awhile-went out and now @1:15ish- she’s back. Someone had been on perch complaining- possibly her.
Ducks on parade……………
Geese on the move……………
@11:22—Eclipse waiting for George…………….
Usual “polite” acceptance……….
Had the nest to himself, so stopped for a few bites before he took off…………..
Lucky to see this……Solar making attempt to fish out in front of nest……
Taking off
…nesting flying behind her……
…down she goes………..
..into a dive……….
She dipped close to the surface a couple of times………….
………skimmed the surface…………
Solar didn’t head back to nest, so no way of telling if successful…………………nice job, baby girl!
photo: cprt2017 OZ.com/spons.byTRS.com
@06:35–Solar waits…..
06:35:53—-George delivers…………
Happy Solar……unhappy porgy…..
@06:26- THE KIDS ARE WAAAIIIITTTTTTTINGGGGGG!
@06:29:52—George & Co. Delivery Service arrives…..
Eclipse gets it and takes it to go, as usual…………
George sitting alone in nest 6:15 a m
Solar was still on the nest as night fell
Someone seems to be on perch….camera shakes now and then and Solar is directing her comments in that direction…
Incoming……
Solar accepts it……………she’s probably not too hungry but it will disappear overnight….security fish….
Solar sitting as dark descends….. and her fish to keep her company
I’ve checked in periodically in the last couple of days, and I really don’t think Solar or Eclipse have been catching meals. They keep calling George, and sometimes he keeps them waiting a long time. However, eventually he goes fishing and comes back with dinner for both. I thought that last year’s babies were catching their own meals by this point in time. They really have an amazing daddy. He makes sure they are fed, even though I believe he wants them to learn how to hunt. Time is getting short, Solar and Eclipse!
18:14:10—fish coming in…
This one’s for Eclipse…
Solar yells after George that her fish is all gone!
George drops in……Eclipse drops down from perch where he’s been yammering away.
All this activity riles up Solar, who is peacefully enjoying her fish.
She starts flapping away and karate chops Eclipse under the chin-if birds have chins……………
He stumbles sideways, out of the nest, but comes right back in………..
………to gulp down the leftover tail George brought him—hey, dads need food too!
And back to yammering…………….
KEVIN…………..hope you were watching all the beautiful sailboats today! Hi, Dee!
photo cprt2017OZ.com/spons.by TRS.com
Solar sees something……………
George touches down……..
Eclipse drops down from perch
The fish does some flopping around but Solar makes sure she gets it…………..
MINE!
Hi all, does anyone know if the nest gets cleaned out for next season ? just wondering
No, it does not,the only time they cleaned it out was when they were lowering the platform.
Much ado about nothing….Solar was cheering George in till she saw the delivery! Used her pity voice to explain her disappointment…………….
After moving the seaweed………………..
…Solar expressed her opinion of it………….
It appears all dregs of Irma are gone; forecast for sun and clear skies in to tonight. Temps now low 80s….and HUMID
This was a great series, Carol 🙂
I agree with Jan L thanks CarolV
@12:07- George leaving after delivery to the no-see zone.
Solar flies in and sees Eclipse has something……….she goes for the steal and comes back with a fishtail………..
George comes in @12:53 with chunk of fish that he gives to a hungry Solar.

Good Luck hope you can figure it out.
I was in Shelter Island this week and it is heaven for osprey fans ! Listening to all their different calls, watching them fish and seeing them up close was incredible.
Lucky you! I love SI but haven’t been there in ages! So close but yet so far!
Trinity – Can you please tell me where you were on Shelter Island where you saw and heard the Ospreys? I was heartened to hear it. Thanks.
They’re literally everywhere ! I walked off the ferry and immediately heard their distinctive calls, while out boating we spotted so many nests ( being out on the water gives the best ‘ birds eye ‘ view of the osprey ). Several families live on a canal behind my friends cottage and I spent hours in a hammock just listening and watching them. Shelter Island gets jam packed during tourist season, May would be a desirable time to visit for osprey fans 😀
Hi lady thanks for posting your pic on site to share with everyone. Glad you finally got to get a break and enjoy the ospreys.
HUGS
one of my pics from yesterdays event
As I think of this—The Cirque du Soleil move…………………..just happy all turned out well …………..prob good practice for future battle for food
9-15-17 WTR97 made another great video of all the drama with George and Solar
WOW! and he still feeds them!
TY to you and WTR97
An excited Solar sees Dad!
1 min.43secs. between fish!
Took to the right to eat…..drifted out of sight……………don’t know if she went to porch or left.
@08:51-BREAKFISH!
That’s ONE approach!
….and it worked!
Ish mine!
OUT!
VERY vocal patrons looking for the waiter with breakfast service!
I heard there was some drama with a fish delivery yesterday….I hope someone posted some shots here..a video would be better………
In any case, there hasn’t been a fish delivery yet this a.m. Since George was practically knocked out of the nest and had some kind of tangled claws with Solar, I wonder if he decided to make hungry kids do their own fishing. Is it just my memory or is it late for both kids to still be dependent? Of course, they may just not have brought a catch home if they have made one, but they do seem to show up on a regular basis for daddy-delivery!
Got my wish! When comments posted, there’s the story! Quite a show!
CarolV, your wish is granted above is the video.
