Belle’s Journey
Written by Dr. Rob Bierregaard & Illustrated by Kate Garchinsky
Take flight with Belle, an osprey born on Martha’s Vineyard as she learns to fly and migrates for the first time to Brazil and back–a journey of more than 8,000 miles.
IMPORTANT: Messages from osprey experts
I haven’t seen the little guy yet this morning, but I would be very surprised if he survived the night. That sure was tough to watch yesterday, but that whole process is as much a part of the essence of being an Osprey as is eating a fish. It’s part of the life of Ospreys that was rarely seen before we started putting cameras in nests. As hard as it is, we should not label the behavior as mean or cruel. Being mean or cruel implies that there is intent to do harm just for harm’s sake. Those young were responding to a set of stimuli (very little food being delivered to the nest and the presence of a very small young) in a way that evolution has hard-wired into them. It helps ensure their survival. Nature is not cruel. It is harsh, unforgiving, and often random (had the little guy been born 1st, he would have been just as aggressive as was his sibling), but not cruel or mean.

Thanks Rob for bringing your knowledge and experience to help us all gain perspective here. We are all saddened by the events that unfolded before our eyes and it’s only natural for all of us to feel and express our emotions appropriately. There have been many issues pertaining to intervention which have been discussed amongst us all. There is no doubt in my mind that the right decision was made, to let nature take it’s course. By the way, that doesn’t equate to heartless, on the contrary, nobody feels worse about this then the apparent decision makers. I say apparent, because when all was said and done, and all the issues were properly weighed, there really weren’t any other options. It was clearly pointed out, by experts, that intervening at this stage could have spooked the whole nest to the point of losing all the young. If the little one was saved, and nursed back to health, what kind of a life would it have had, perhaps caged up in a zoo. I remember when I was younger I saw a golden eagle in captivity, caged behind a wire mesh. I could practically see it’s tears. As far as placing the little one in another nest, such a low probability of success would never have justified the possibility of spooking the nest. There’s a piece of me, however heavy hearted, that believes that perhaps it is better to be born free and die free. We mourn for the little one as we marvel at the wonders of nature.
Hello Paul,
Thanks for your query, and you have my admiration for persevering. We know very well how tough your job is, including dealing with an anxious public.
Our policy with our Bird Cams project is essentially “just say no” to pleas for interference. The behavior you are witnessing – while seemingly cruel and heartless to us – is natural for many kinds of birds, especially those that feed on variable, unpredictable food supplies. The little nestling does have a chance to survive, but if it does not then that result was “meant to be” by the nature of Osprey breeding strategy. The wonderful things about these nest cameras also sometimes yield the difficult things for us to watch. As you might know, we actually post a “siblicide alert” on some of our cams where we suspect the possibility exists.
I’m copying your note to Charles Eldermire, project leader for our Bird Cams. He may have some additional comments, and he would be the one to ask if we might be able to use your stored files for biological analysis.
Best wishes, and good luck,
John W. Fitzpatrick
Director, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
It’s also important to acknowledge that intervening can also cause problems of its own—depending on the ages of the birds in the nest, disturbing them can trigger an early fledge. We have restricted the scenarios in which we would even consider intervening to injuries or dangers that are explicitly human-derived. For example, 3 or 4 years ago we were alerted by viewers that one of the osprey chicks at the Hellgate Osprey nest was entangled in monofilament line. We consulted with our partners there (wildlife biologists, raptor researchers, raptor rehabbers) to determine if the monofilament was an issue, and if intervening was both likely to solve the issue AND not have bad effects on the other nestlings. In the end, a quick trip to the nest was scheduled via a bucket truck, the monofilament was removed, and the nestlings all eventually fledged. In that case, all of the permits were already in hand to be studying the ospreys, and we had already discussed how to approach issues in the nest.
Good luck to the young one—hope it all turns out well.

I’ve been to your site—great cam! And I noticed the runt in the nest. This is just normal Osprey reproduction. It happens all the time and you should not intervene. It’s tough to watch, but it’s how nature works. Ospreys almost always lay 3 eggs and on average fledge between 1 and 1.5 young each year. They stagger the hatch so there is a spread of ages in the young. That way, if food is short, the first-hatched (and therefore largest) will get enough food to survive while the smaller nest mates do not. If all three young were the same size and there was only enough food for 1 young, none of the young would get enough food and they would all die. If there’s lots of food, the smallest will eventually get fed and can survive. These nest cams can show some gut-wrenching scenes. The most infamous perhaps was one of the very first Osprey cams (on Long Island somewhere), where the smallest young died. One of the adults carried it out of the nest and after several minutes flew back into the nest and fed it to the other young. Waste-not-want-not at its goriest. At Hog Island up in Maine just last week a Bald Eagle came in and took the young out of the nest. Last year at another nest, cameras documented a Great-horned Owl taking young Ospreys out of a nest in NJ or MD. All of these things have been going on for millions of years and Ospreys are doing fine.

George with fish, the princess wants it
George hangs on to it
Jane goes to fetch the fish for her highness
Sneaks up on George
Almost there
Got it!
Come and get it!
August 26th
Full Sturgeon Moon 7:56am.
The fishing tribes of North America are given credit for the naming of August’s moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month.
A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because, as the moon rises, it appears reddish through any sultry haze. It was also called the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon
Weather— 71 now, with clear skies……. so we can see the moon rising behind Squirmy and 62 by dawn
Friday, sunny and high 0f 80
HAGN!
Thanks for the info Carol!!
19:11- or so……………. George is in on the right for a while, but Squirmy just stays put.
Jane comes in………. goes to right. George must have had a fish there, as Squirmy was fed by Jane,
17:34– George brings in a blackfish…… small enough for Squirmy to handle. He waited, as Squirmy showed interest in the fish, but didn’t take it.
He moved and just stood with the fish, as Squirmy just looked……..
Jane came in and was happy to take the fish……. and fed Squirmy…….
Another feeding!
Just noticed! Looks like Squirmy’s nipping George’s tail! Be better nipping those fish, little one!
Looks like a good fish 🐟 George! Squirmy looks happy 😆!
Magandang umaga Ozland!🌥
There’s a lot of alarming going on!
Move mom!
🤬
Still not in order…1…3…2
Which way did George go?
This fish looks like it “jackknifed “!
Breakfish is coming!
Breakfish is here!
Gimme some!
The princess goes for the “steal”!
Was fed by Jane
Breakfish over….think I’ll eat here again for lunch!
Me and daddy o
See ya later! Think big fish!
Someone is getting braver!
Will she or won’t she? Hoping she will break the record……if she fledges on the right, it will be hard to tell. Unless she is gone more than 9-10 seconds. It does seem once they fledge, they don’t helicopter anymore. Easier to tell on other sites where you can view the whole nest
Isabella: I wouldn’t be too concerned about the chick fledging from the right … I’d be more worried about OZ taking down the video stream for 1 hour during the middle of the day (prime time frame for a chick to fledge) to reset the streaming software … just when the chick does a whole lot of winger-sizing and hovering and is standing on the precipice looking as if it is contemplating taking the leap!!
I hate it when I log in and she’s out of sight! Have to hunt down when last seen and what she was doing! I know it won’t be long, but still………….
There was great excitement as George flew in…………. bummer……………
Sun breaking thru the haze…………
GM from Squirmy
Jane was chirping for fish and Squirmy joined in. George stopped in….. message received?
Squirmy did a little practicing, floating above frame. She landed against the barrier, which is definitely in the way…….. she definitely doesn’t have practice space like Twee at the Rooftop Nest!
Magandang gabi Ozland!😴
The momma and me
Look, Ma…… one foot!………. and GN, Peeples!
Mostly clear shies, 75 now, dropping to 66……………. sunny tomorrow, high 70s
Thanks, Jane…………….
Squirmy helps Mom………..
…… and helps us a little by knocking Jane’s stick sideways……
Stretchercize—
The golden hour………….
…………………………….. the copper eye………..
Beep— beep—– beep—– back up; unload
Then- flap…….celebrating or clearing the air?
16:57- George brings a large chunk of fish,,,,,,,,,, Jane takes it off his talons…….
The usual happy butts view of feeding.
George gave us a beak cleaning lesson……
Squirmy wingercized without much hovering…………. did a nice hip-hop dance across the nest…..
I see we have new window décor………………..
Looks like George doing the decorating……………….
Enjoy every ones comments and all the pics. Thank you. I must admit that this is the ‘stickiest’ nest for this location this year. But not much trash – so nice to not see the trash. This little one is a real dear.
Did Squirmy Fledge Today?? I actual saw a fly in Nice!
Squirmy must be tired today. She is resting up. I sure do love the comments. The comments really cheer me up. We are having a major problem with red tide here in SW Florida. Lots and lots of dead fish, and dead dolphins and manatees. It is so sad. The fish-eating birds near the coast probably cannot find fish unless they go far out into the Gulf of Mexico.
I saw that in the news. That’s so sad! Seems very extended, too.
Squirmy is definitely a beautiful little girl!
Bom Dia Ozland!🌥
After requesting a fish…..a lot of alarming
Still waiting
Hey! There goes dad looking for a fish
There he goes again!
Fish?….stick….fish? Fish? Fish?
Stick
I could go for some fish sticks!
Waiting for fish
Eerie silence
Brief moment of freedom
Jane flew off perch…more alarming…..the princess doing her “vulture “ pancake
Jane and George
Is anyone going to get a fish?!
Tired of waiting
Fish please!
No fish
Just more alarming!
Jane makes sure the princess stays pancaked!
Here I sit like a bird in the wilderness waiting for my food!……..did breakfish come and I missed it? Will lunch be served? Stay tuned!
There’s been a lot of alarming….. I guess with all the juvies already out, there’s lots of traffic.
GM, Squirmy- nice breeze ruffling her feathers…… and a fogged over lens…….there was a quick shower earlier, with a chance of more later.
Someone, I think Jane, is alarming from the perch………… and the OZland day has begun
Yes, it’s Jane ………. in and put of the nest, as Squirmy pancakes……..
Boa noite Ozland!💤
Abstract family photo 🎨
George came in with a big fish 🐟
Then started alarming
Chowing down
The princess wasn’t interested
Or was she?
Parent watching
Parents
Ya see what I put up with!
The shananagens!
Well….they do feed me!
Thx mom and dad!
George was bringing in fish after fish yesterday! I was losing track!
My fingers are getting worn out, George!……………… @18:32- Another, bigger fish…………..Squirmy watches it come in…………..but isn’t interested, so George goes….
G is back minutes later and Jane comes to get the fish. This time, Squirmy decides she will eat………
But we’re not done yet………………….. @ 19:14- I thought maybe George had collected leftovers from the last fish, but, no……. this fish has a head.
Squirmy was full! George gets to feed himself and maybe save some for a midnight snack
Squirmy waves GN, Peeples…………
70 now; temp. rising to 72 by sunrise. Showers likely, 2-6am.
Chance of t-storms tomorrow morn. 9-11 am. Sun likely tomorrow after 2 pm, with high around 80….
I am absolutely in love with this little girl. Just had to share. The fact that she hangs out in front of the camera for us is magic. Bob said the latest fledge he ever saw was August 23- I think she will fledge by then. This has been a season with a big change, but Jane is so adorable and such a good new mom and George will always be the ultimate Studmuffin. Everything has just been so beautiful, thank heavens. We have seen enough drama over the years.
So true!! And her close-ups have been wonderful to see…. so many cute and funny expressions!
GinaM…I wholeheartedly agree!….are you the GinaM that did summer of 2015?
Not to be boring………… @18:02- George brings another fish…………. Jane comes for this one……and George goes…
Good for her! Squirmy making efforts to take the fish……………… she might have a better chance with George! This small fish goes quickly- and Jane does NOT share the tailfin!
17:43- George brings in another fish…………….. He gets to feed Squirmy.
The princess requests bedside service but G ignores her, She finally hoists herself up and goes over to him.
George gave her the tailfin…..It took at least 3 tries, but she got it down………..
Someone is hungry today!
Feeding
Full tummy dance
Did you watch my dance?
Seagull watching
Hey Dad!…let’s strike some poses for Trinity! Lol!
Dad! Look what I can do!
Dad!…Dad!
Dad?
Dad missed the show!
Everyone I can catch!
My Favorite Osprey Martian……….
Lol — loved that show as a kid!!
15:21- FISH! and I think Jane wants it……….. Both adults fly out………
I passed this by several times, thinking Jane hadn’t come back! But that tail tip and happy Squirmy noises tell the tale! Feed me, Mamma!
And THIS was a second feeding……………
Squirmy Fly
I see the barricades are erected! Can’t wait to get home to see what that’s about!
And I don’t see Squirmy. Suspense! Probably in twilight zone
Annnnnndddddd sttttrrrreeeeettttccchhhhh!!!!!!!
Remember when a Squirmy stretch didn’t reach as far as that first stick? { sniff, sniff, tear drop}
Yes, I do remember. I’ve been remembering those first weeks when she had the duck butt! She was such a cutie, and has developed into a beautiful almost adult osprey!!! Hard to accept that we won’t have her many more weeks!
Aloha kakahiaka Ozland!☀️
Breakfish!
Dad,mom and breakfish fly out
Fish dance
Someone must be hungry
Sushi delight!
Jane flew out…then back to Do morning chores

Morning meditation…..they stayed like this for a while
Jane flew off
Then back
To continue chores
Off again
On again
Off again!!
Back!
Off!!!
Chores interrupted
Fun interrupted
Taking a break!
……
George brought breakfish; Jane took it; looked like someone flew past and tapped her and she flew out…………………… guess I’m gonna miss the rest….darn work!
That might have been George flying over Jane. Looked like she startled. In any case. She was back to feed Squirmy
Good Morning!!!! Camera on and Squirmy rarin’ to go!
Aloha Ahiahi Ozland!😴
Abstract family photos
Pretty baby
Up Down. Up. Down!
Up. Down
Her ups are getting longer!
Squirmy did a little post-dinner practicing…………
.
…………….and GOOD-NIGHT, PEEPLES!
Squirmy chirps a greeting and IT’S DAD! with a smallish fish which is gone in no time……………
George gifts Squirmy with the tail, still a good size hunk…………..
While S works on it, George takes off….
Princess Squirmy sure is adorable! I love the closeups of her. She is quite a gal! I hope I get to see the fledge or videos of the fledge. Thank you all for the beautiful pics of the OZ family.
Your welcome Elaine!
Hey! HELLOoooooo!!!! Was it something I said?
Didn’t seem to be much happening this afternoon in the scroll back I got to see……… Lazy afternoon……………..
74 now; skies clearing with temps dropping to a happy64 around dawn. Clouds coming back after 3am, leading to a partly sunny Tuesday, temps low-mid 70s.

Is my audience still in attendance?
“Queen “ of her seadom!
Jane flew off…the princess tried to follow
Seaweed watching
George tries to hush her highness with a gift!
Didn’t work!
George seemed to be in the way
So the princess whacked him multiple times with her wing! ……hard to see this in pics, my husband and I were watching and laughing 😆
George got the hint and flew out of the Royal reach
That’s right Daddy O! My throne!
Such a thoughtful father George is.
Baby workin’ hard!
Squirmy is def letting the fame go to her head 😀
GM, PEEPLES! A rather abstract Squirmy limbering up……….
A cool cloudy night in the high 60s passes to a cool cloudy day in the mid 70s!
I am probably not gonna witness the fledge because of this pesky work habit….. so I hope lots of pics post whenever it does!
Goede Nacht Ozland! 💤
Someone is staying up late!
After Jane flew out
Think someone wanted to follow
Well. look at that! Squirmy makes a move for the fish! It was removed off right and feeding is more noise than view…………
I love the awesome and beautiful closeup cam view of Squirmy.
Squirmy got up to greet Jane and said a few things. Just like any teen-ager, she is getting mouthy………
She does some more practicing………… she goes out of frame several times and is doing some hovering in place…………
An osprey has been flying out over the water……. I could here George in the distance, alarming….. Squirmy cuts practice short……….
Hate catching stupid mistakes! Hear, not here… duh!
At 15:14– Squirmy says someone is coming—
She stretches, turns…
falls on her face……….
regains her composure and finishes what she started…………
…………. because room is needed when the invisible osprey comes to feed her………..
It’s George…….. and Squirmy shows what she has been practicing!
Oopsy daisy!….nice ps!
Not the most graceful phase for osprey chicks !
No…………. just adorable!
Part seem to grow overnight…………. who has time to get used to them???

George decided to give her wing room!
Love her happy dance!
😊 it was so cute!…love the “fan” tail!
Looks like a passing sprinkle…………
These clouds are supposed to hang around for several days, with occasional showers but mostly general gloom. At least they brought cooler temps. with them! 73 now. @ 5pm.

Wheeeee!
Excuse me dad! ….what nerve! Lol

Got some wing shots….

TA DA!!!!!
More practice; more out of frame lifts…………..
………pooped!……….
Squirmy turning seven weeks old and developing as expected, under the guidance of our beloved George and new mom Jane. For any viewers that repeatedly questioned Janes’ parenting abilities, and possibly even stopped watching because Gracie was given the old heave ho, you’re missing out. I just love this nest 😀
I agree. I love Gracie but this has been an eye-opening learning experience for me! Like many other people (I’m sure), I expected a new animal mom to know what she needed to step right in to the role. It’s been a blessing seeing Jane progress as George led her each step of the way……
Trinity…you go girl!!
Watching the feed early afternoon, wondering if this kid has ever taken off yet, and at 13:26 levitated off the nest a couple of times.. is this the first time so far? Just curious, I know this one was born late, but worried it had not advanced to flying yet….
She’s getting real air now. I posted one from about 6am under the big 7 I posted for her birthday. That’s the highest one I had seen and I see others have posted good air jumps from today………….. I’m happy/sad that she’s doing so well! But she’s not “flying” yet.
Got some serious winger-sizing and hovering going on today!!
Buongiorno Ozland! ☁️

8/19/18- HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SQUIRMY!
..
Baby gets AIR!
Squirmy sat and watched over the bay for a while.
You can see the clouds over the south side the Island. They would sporadically light up from within with the lightening.
Cloudy in OZland until about 2am…. After that, 30-50% chance of showers continues all thru Sunday. Temp now about 72, holding fairy steady-70-73- all tonight thru tomorrow.
HAGN, everyone.
oíche mhaith (agat) , Isabella
Just realized……. I keep adding an extra syllable to LIGHTNING…… silly me….
I drove home from work (I work on North Fork, out toward OZland) in pouring rain- thunder, lightening, flooding streets…… while I waited at one intersection, with rain hitting the car so hard the wipers couldn’t keep up, there was a hole in the clouds off to the right and you had an unobstructed view of the sun.
Driving cross island, heading over to the south fork, it rained so hard, I could barely see the road. I turned on to rt.24, heading SE, and drove right out of the storm…. And to make my day, there was a beautiful, full rainbow!
There hadn’t been any rain by my house, but it’s getting very dark here, with thunder in the distance. According to local weather, it’s a large, slow moving cell- heading westward…
Squirmy doesn’t look like they had any rain, but that may change…..The sky in these shots looks a bit ominous. Squirmy was tracking someone flying around overhead………..
