Belle’s Journey
Written by Dr. Rob Bierregaard & Illustrated by Kate Garchinsky
Take flight with Belle, an osprey born on Martha’s Vineyard as she learns to fly and migrates for the first time to Brazil and back–a journey of more than 8,000 miles.
IMPORTANT: Messages from osprey experts
I haven’t seen the little guy yet this morning, but I would be very surprised if he survived the night. That sure was tough to watch yesterday, but that whole process is as much a part of the essence of being an Osprey as is eating a fish. It’s part of the life of Ospreys that was rarely seen before we started putting cameras in nests. As hard as it is, we should not label the behavior as mean or cruel. Being mean or cruel implies that there is intent to do harm just for harm’s sake. Those young were responding to a set of stimuli (very little food being delivered to the nest and the presence of a very small young) in a way that evolution has hard-wired into them. It helps ensure their survival. Nature is not cruel. It is harsh, unforgiving, and often random (had the little guy been born 1st, he would have been just as aggressive as was his sibling), but not cruel or mean.

Thanks Rob for bringing your knowledge and experience to help us all gain perspective here. We are all saddened by the events that unfolded before our eyes and it’s only natural for all of us to feel and express our emotions appropriately. There have been many issues pertaining to intervention which have been discussed amongst us all. There is no doubt in my mind that the right decision was made, to let nature take it’s course. By the way, that doesn’t equate to heartless, on the contrary, nobody feels worse about this then the apparent decision makers. I say apparent, because when all was said and done, and all the issues were properly weighed, there really weren’t any other options. It was clearly pointed out, by experts, that intervening at this stage could have spooked the whole nest to the point of losing all the young. If the little one was saved, and nursed back to health, what kind of a life would it have had, perhaps caged up in a zoo. I remember when I was younger I saw a golden eagle in captivity, caged behind a wire mesh. I could practically see it’s tears. As far as placing the little one in another nest, such a low probability of success would never have justified the possibility of spooking the nest. There’s a piece of me, however heavy hearted, that believes that perhaps it is better to be born free and die free. We mourn for the little one as we marvel at the wonders of nature.
Hello Paul,
Thanks for your query, and you have my admiration for persevering. We know very well how tough your job is, including dealing with an anxious public.
Our policy with our Bird Cams project is essentially “just say no” to pleas for interference. The behavior you are witnessing – while seemingly cruel and heartless to us – is natural for many kinds of birds, especially those that feed on variable, unpredictable food supplies. The little nestling does have a chance to survive, but if it does not then that result was “meant to be” by the nature of Osprey breeding strategy. The wonderful things about these nest cameras also sometimes yield the difficult things for us to watch. As you might know, we actually post a “siblicide alert” on some of our cams where we suspect the possibility exists.
I’m copying your note to Charles Eldermire, project leader for our Bird Cams. He may have some additional comments, and he would be the one to ask if we might be able to use your stored files for biological analysis.
Best wishes, and good luck,
John W. Fitzpatrick
Director, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
It’s also important to acknowledge that intervening can also cause problems of its own—depending on the ages of the birds in the nest, disturbing them can trigger an early fledge. We have restricted the scenarios in which we would even consider intervening to injuries or dangers that are explicitly human-derived. For example, 3 or 4 years ago we were alerted by viewers that one of the osprey chicks at the Hellgate Osprey nest was entangled in monofilament line. We consulted with our partners there (wildlife biologists, raptor researchers, raptor rehabbers) to determine if the monofilament was an issue, and if intervening was both likely to solve the issue AND not have bad effects on the other nestlings. In the end, a quick trip to the nest was scheduled via a bucket truck, the monofilament was removed, and the nestlings all eventually fledged. In that case, all of the permits were already in hand to be studying the ospreys, and we had already discussed how to approach issues in the nest.
Good luck to the young one—hope it all turns out well.

I’ve been to your site—great cam! And I noticed the runt in the nest. This is just normal Osprey reproduction. It happens all the time and you should not intervene. It’s tough to watch, but it’s how nature works. Ospreys almost always lay 3 eggs and on average fledge between 1 and 1.5 young each year. They stagger the hatch so there is a spread of ages in the young. That way, if food is short, the first-hatched (and therefore largest) will get enough food to survive while the smaller nest mates do not. If all three young were the same size and there was only enough food for 1 young, none of the young would get enough food and they would all die. If there’s lots of food, the smallest will eventually get fed and can survive. These nest cams can show some gut-wrenching scenes. The most infamous perhaps was one of the very first Osprey cams (on Long Island somewhere), where the smallest young died. One of the adults carried it out of the nest and after several minutes flew back into the nest and fed it to the other young. Waste-not-want-not at its goriest. At Hog Island up in Maine just last week a Bald Eagle came in and took the young out of the nest. Last year at another nest, cameras documented a Great-horned Owl taking young Ospreys out of a nest in NJ or MD. All of these things have been going on for millions of years and Ospreys are doing fine.

poor George has been standing there for more than 20 min
Beautiful morning ospreyz!
Nest fluffing..egg rolling…fish eating…sparrows chatting…relatively quiet morning
Let go of my fisho George!
Pics
DID EVERYONE NOTICE ANYTHING MISSING??? Like an annoying stick????
Would have loved to see how!…just in time for a hatch 🐣!
Jane and eggies in the moonlight
GM, Jane!
Breakfish….
I wonder if that might be George in that first shot? in the moonlight, all osprey look alike… teehee
How do you like your morning eggs! Hatched would be nice
cprt;OZ.com/spons.byTRS.com
Come CarolV!….it’s easy to identify between them with no head…no daylight and pixelating screen! Lol!
OK, smartypants! Too funny!
Especially grateful to Carol V and Isabella for all of their excellent pictures and commentary. Not an easy task. It would be impossible to stay with the action on this nest without you this year. Missing the lively and informative chat of past contributors understandably absent now. Hoping for a successful season for George and Jane.
Thx Marg!..especially grateful to you!…I post pics for the people so people can see what’s going on… in the beginning it was only commentary and to me frustrating to try and picture what was happening….or try and scroll back and forth to find what they were talking about…was grateful when CarolV and others started posting pics!
TY, Marg… I hate missing things and am grateful when someone fills us in, Even with the 12 hr. scrollback, I miss so much! Figure others could enjoy the pics. too.
Good night 🌙 ospreyz! 😴
Shelli & Maryann hello 🙂
Hello to you, Rjoneal! Fingers crossed for a hatch this weekend!
Pretty sunset….
About 64 now, dropping to 60 under clear skies. Tomorrow starting out sunny, with some high clouds developing midday. Temps rising to about 75.
The eggs were briefly visible, as George left and Jane stepped down from perch… GoodNight, to all…………
photo:cprt.OZ.com/spons.byTRS.com
and again….waiting for :59 mins……….
right on time………
Thought my eyesight took a turn for the worse!
I mean it will be very hard to tell if there’s a pip!
Only George’s shadow knows
Jane pops in to nosh on her fish 🐟
BOO_HOOOOO……
Waiting till :59th minute to see if it magically fixes itself
It’s back in the :59th minute.
George is alarming….
Jane came flying in, probably as back-up. She was carrying a fish, presumably delivered in 1/2hr. cam was down.
Both flew out…….
…. leaving a view of the eggies.
Enlargement below….. I always think I see a pip when time is ticking! Top of brown egg on right…… but they are really too shaded to tell
George flew in to the perch to yell challenges…
Jane came in to eat at home…
Then, she heads back to eggies, while George is still yelling threats……
That was scary! George came in and the video started skipping… to the greyed over screen to the blue death screen……..BUT…it came back! There was a brief partial view of the eggs but stick is still in the way.
Jane blew upward to land on the nest….
REALLY windy!
Jane had to peep-peep-peep for several minutes before George gave up his spot
A gentleman should give up his seat!
The wind is working on our “favorite” stick…… everybody chant—— GO-GO-GO- over the side
That stick doesn’t seem to budge unless Jane or George shakes their tail feathers and moves it!
Jane comes in with her bribe…. George tried ignoring her so she brought it right to his face…
It’s pretty breezy up there! And my weather app shows windy symbols for later, after 3- have to see what that looks like…. the nest is already swaying.
HELLO, Everyone just wanted to check in and say there should be a pip happening soon, any day! Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe with all weather conditions around the world.
I Miss the whole gang hope everyone is still enjoying and learning about this Osprey Nest of George & Jane and Family.
Take Care Hugs to all : )
HI! Good to hear from you! We’re all on alert but the view is sketchy… waiting for a @#^* stick to blow out…
CarilV hi my friend yes I figured it might be pretty tough to see but Eggwatch is Eggciting… hopefully when lil on hatches we might get a glimpse of it, at some point we will lol
take care hugs
Hi RJ…have been watching …should be soon…
June C hi to you my friend glad you are awaiting the new arrival. Defiantly will be interesting to see how much we can see of lil one.
George no more sticks please a matter of fact Jane could you do some hoarding removal lol. Take care hugs
George brings some nice seaweed as an exchange bribe….
He does a thorough egg roll before settling.
Jane has a visitor….. Hint— Her tail is looking fly…..
Shining the spotlight on the stars of the show

Breakfish!
…. and she’s back..
Jane was on guard and alerting for several minutes…. must have been a pesky pest….
Mornin’, Jane!
George came in for his turn…..
OMG….the colors!
On …morning Jane
Good morning ospreyz!….think this is Jane….now today is a beautiful day for a hatch 🐣…I believe Mary E. Has today as first pip
Yep it’s Jane…cause herrre’s Georgy!
I want a hatch today so I can nickname it Flag!!!! But I never get it right
Didn’t realize it was flag day…good thing I already have the flag out…..flag is cute….or star ⭐️…or Gloria…or America!….but I don’t think hatch is today
Incoming Jane with her beautiful wings!
Get up George!….ok dear
Good night 😴 ospreyz!
Love those wings!
Wings n feathers..my favorite photos…
Dinnerfish @19:21….. Jane did her little dance, as George approached…
Jane moves in and takes the fish to go….
Jane was back in about 25 mins. George turned over the nest without fuss.
Don’t even think about blocking our view!
And than he knocked that stick back down!
Looks like George wants the eggs but Jane wants dinner. She’s cheep, cheeping and not moving… George left.
Saw that CarolV….she kept yapping & looking at his feet!….he finally got the message!
She certainly gets her point across!
Wondering if anyone else thinks that uppermost egg looks a little funny at the top? Wishful thinking? Couldn’t enlarge more without going blurry….
cprt-OZ.com/TaxReductionServices.com
Looks like, George? Thinks so too…could be a pip
For those of us who remember….. Groucho Marx eyebrows…
He he!
It’s like a nor Easter up there…the rain was coming sideways.
A lull
George is to her right alerting
Jane goes into action
Or was it a ploy to sit on the eggs? Lol
Jane was quietly peeping at George for a fish
Tired of waiting for fish
Could it be?
Good fish come to those who wait!
Btw…in her excitement of getting a fish….Jane moved George’s stick!
She’s baaack!
Jane throws hints for George to take a hike
New way for headless osprey
It was a wild storm! Fortunately, it came in bands, with some relief between.
And that *&$# stick!
What a day they had…I was only going to post a couple of pics…but so much was happening..good thing there wasn’t a hatch!
Rough day for the osprey.. a lot of rain and wind today. Looks like it’s Supposed to pass through in the next hour. Temp 58 and only getting to about 62
There’s something rearranged about that front stockade. We’Ll just be seeing toenails soon….
It’s been a miserable morning- rain and wind…. fortunately, the rain has been running in bands, so there’s intermittent relief
Looks like some rearranging has been done to the front stockade fence… yippee….. they’ll be up to the camera soon
Sorry for the double post! Sent from my phone at work…. and I screwed up…. the brain is floating in sinus gunk, due to the lovely weather!
In my Facebook memories today from 2017, two chicks in the best this a.m. wonder when the 2019 chicks will hatch! Not a nice day in the neighborhood today, lots of wind and rain.
Nest, not best, lol
Hi Holly…have to say, at first I thought “ how rude of someone to correct her”…than looked at the names and realized you corrected yourself! Lol
Good morning Jane.. good morning ospreyz!
Jane in the blue period
Shift
George blue period
Jane carefully makes her way down
George’s turn to tip toe around
After some alarming…George takes off
Jane usually steps right in…eggs were alone a bit before George came back
After upstairs and downstairs alerting..they change places
Jane moves nude stick that’s been teetering all morning
Thought there was finally a lull..til Jane started alerting and jumping up and down
Hopefully some rest after a busy morning…didn’t see a fish delivered…maybe too many intruders
Jane noses in..fighting the wind
Pretty clear view of the eggs…if June c is right about a hatch 🐣 today..we should have a good look!!
New osprey do!
Shift change in the early morning….believe Jane to George
June 17th
Full Strawberry Moon
4:31 am
Supposed to be a good time to observe Jupiter, but a bit cloudy… may try later this week…
Always enjoy your moon info!
Jane in; George out.
Looks like a cloudy night, with rain beginning after 3a.m. Temp 61 now and will hover low 60s, high 50s all night.
Rain expected to linger all day tomorrow, with more low 60s temps.
Good night Jane… good night 💤 ospreyz!
It’s hard to see when fish arrive…. This was the only one I saw on the scrollback.
Noticed Jane dance over to the right side
This was all we got to see of the fish…
This evening, Jane is projecting “fish” toward George, up on the perch…
Well, at least she got G to come down so she could go for an evening run.
George comes down from perch
Jane takes off
While George unwittingly shows some interesting angles
Don’t know if he was aware of the stick
Ahh…finally!
Late lunch?…she took a couple of bites before she left
First pip June 14
Good morning ospreyz…..rise and……
Do they make sunglasses for osprey?
Jane gets a break and a fish
Must have been a small fish…George is off
Jane’s back on
Beautiful sunshine!
63 now; rising to 70, under increasingly cloudy ⛅️ skies
HAGD, everyone!
Cam just cam on…… GM, Jane
Here’s George!
Asking George for fish…
Watching him hopefully get fish
No fish
No fish
She’s right behind you George!
And she wants you to get up!
Trending osprey hair style
Finally!
Quick dance before he goes
Jane and eggs
Pretty Jane
Still waiting for dinner fish
Could it be?
It be!
So far George is on night shift
George was on nest..Jane was upstairs…til she flew off (she is that blur on the left)
Took a quick spin back to the nest
Hosting the late night show
Good night 💤 ospreyz!
what is the eta for hatching…can’t believe I missed the egg laying!!
Only have time to check in once a day!!!
My guess is June 16
My guess June 13…
The wind did us a favor….. got rid of that annoying piece of bark!……………. took it halfway; then finished the job later…
This is what I’m still getting 🙁😤😡🤬!
Isabella….I seem to remember in previous years, some people had a hard time getting OZ depending on what platform they used.
I watch on … hmmm. what is the name? it’s symbol is a blue e… Microsoft Edge
Don’t forget…. always try restarting the computer…. seems to fix many things. And I’m fairly computer illiterate. Hopefully some else can advise you.
Looks good on aol.com too.
Thank you so much CarolV!….first time had this happen…I updated my iPad. Seemed to do the trick! Was freaking out so close to hatch time!
Also try clearing your browser history, clear all history…seems to fix things for me!
Thx Robininmd!….btw, last I checked a nest in your neck of the woods isn’t on this year
Yes Isabella I saw that too. Was hoping they would have taken the 2nd nest they built instead. Hopefully it won’t be too hot for the chicks this year. But think the heat is back on this weekend.
Tuned in around 2:45 pm, Jane has such lovely feather coloring, it’s very distinctive. And she seems so much more comfortable this year egg sitting.
Hi Trinity…she sure is more mature mommy this time around..1st. Egg should be hatching soon..
She seems to be doing great! Love their relationship. George seems more involved with the hatching part than he was with Gracie. Maybe last year’s forced involvement showed him how much he enjoyed it!
I wonder how Jane will react to the first hatch she gets to sit through… since Squirmy hatched under George last year.
Beauty and the Breeze…
I had a feeling there was a fish delivery, but my phone is hard to fine tune the video… and this was quick! Was happy to find this when I got home on the computer….
Jane got up and headed right…. and, happy day, a fish!.. Off she went.
George came in…
Jane was back, all refreshed….
Nice change in the weather!
Went back to find an earlier delivery (10:46)after it stopped raining…. You go, George!… Looks like the whole fish!
Was concerned with the weather that George hadn’t been able to fish yesterday or this morning…. did anyone see deliveries?
Love the pics and caption!
For beauty and the breeze
Nobody’s home?
Jane just stepped out….
George is in
Watching from phone and isn’t nearly as much fun!
Half the time the posts don’t go through
Another excuse for a new phone ☎️
.
It’s a pea soup kind of morning…..
Glad to see you, George!
George enjoys a good think 🤔
There’s a break in the rain. Jane stood and just floated upward.
George came in so she could have a much need break.
That George is so HOT, the lens is steaming up!
Jane came back…..
One of the neighbors flew upward.
For some reason that piece of bark reminds me of the Highline in NYC, a little walkway for sightseeing !
I’ve heard so much about the Highline! It sounds so interesting! And such a good way to repurpose those old tracks!
Trinity, yes!
CarolV, the Highline is awesome! If you’re ever in the city, don’t miss it!!
Come a little bit closer,
….. you’re my kind of girl
…………………..so big and so strong…
Come a little bit closer
…..we’re not alone, but…
,,………………………. these eggs need to stay warm.
And then he left…….
Sorry that was Jane going…. had watched on phone between customers… shame on me- and just went back to watch now on real screen.
It’s raining in OZland…..
Started around 3:15 where I work. Was a fine misty rain. That’s what this looked like on the live video….. Supposed to rain most of the night and thru morning. Temp os about 63 now. Since this is a warm front, temps rising to 66 and holding steady overnight.
pic lost along the way…. showed it was attached!
Puddles on the back…..
Hi All,
I can’t remember when the eggs were laid. Could someone remind me so I’ll know approx. hatch date? Also, is there going to be anything done to the camera so that we can see something when the chicks hatch? It was said a while ago that the owners were looking for a solution. Just wondering if that’s still the case or not?
Thanks
Egg 1 is estimated to have been laid on 5/9 and the 2nd one likely laid on 5/12. The third egg was laid on 5/15. We have not heard back in regards to anything being done to adjust the cam.
Thanks so much for the update!
You’re welcome, Paula!
Hi Paula!…my guess for first hatch 🐣 is June 16
Round and round we go…what Jane and George are doing..only they know
It seems ok on my end..
Is anyone else getting the maddening, hypnotizing circle?
Thanks Isabella
I’ll be trying to see whatever we might be able to see!
Can you see me now?
Looks like they moved that bark or added more, building the wall
George on the job early
Overseeing his kingdom 😀
Good night 💤 ospreyz!
BEWARE…..THE CLAW……
@19:42…. George delivers- right in front! No complaining about offside deliveries this time!
….. Jane takes it…..
And off she goes…..
Jane was back just after 9..
Now 59, under clear skies…….. clouding up toward morning, with temps. about 56.
Rain in the forecast…. starting in the afternoon, with temps mid 60s
Wonder where she goes to eat her fish?
Don’t know who’s who…perfect expression!
On …beware the claw
It was George putting his best foot forward!
Now, Jane is pulling things from the egg bowl to add to that pile…..
Jane moved this lovely clump from the right side, where it WAS mercifully out of sight…
She seems restless, like she can’t be comfortable for long.
Jane out; George in…..
Boys just wanna have fun……………….
Darn you, Jane!!!!!
Our view, our view!
We can kiss your fluffy WHAT?
Just before the curtain came down…
photo/cprt.Ospreyzone.com/spons.byTRS.com
Just so there’s no misunderstanding- that’s in Front of the eggs, NOT on them
Too funny Carol !!!
Jane says…show’s over!
Is that white fluffy feather on the left attached with gorilla glue????? Seems like it’s been whipping around in the breeze forever………….
Beautiful sunny morning, temps should get close to 70. May have some clouds sliding in later.
Alert and go
Jane comes right in
Seagull fly by?
I saw George’s take-off this a.m…. I thought “bat-ot-of-hell” when he went!
After her fish break, Jane was on the nest for a short shift. Here, George comes in and we see a shadow pass over. After that challenge, George took over egg sitting again.
Obviously, the pest is relentless…
8:20- Fish delivery on right… good size!
George came in….
There’s a lot of fuss this a.m. George is up and down and lots of chirping. Can also hear Jane upstairs, later. joining in
Liked the way G looked when he was all fluffed up.
George is up and alerting
George counts his eggs….before they hatch 🐣
Jane just jumped up in response to this intruder.
When I watch the nest at work, I’m always amazed how close these pests will get! Hovering right over the nest as if taunting the resident…..
The rare 4 footed osprey…… or Jane coming in…
George going… hopefully on a breakfish run
Morning CarolV!…four legged osprey…funny!
GM, Jane! Cam came up 03:59-
Sunrise caught Jane in the same pose!
George comes in
4:47- They must have partly filled in the egg cup, since we can see the eggies more often. TY!
.
Thought Jane was on for the night shift til George came in
Thought George was on for the night til Jane came down…and got George to leave (he is that blur)
Good night Jane…good night ospreyz!😴
Can’t remember last time saw three eggs!
