Belle’s Journey
Written by Dr. Rob Bierregaard & Illustrated by Kate Garchinsky
Take flight with Belle, an osprey born on Martha’s Vineyard as she learns to fly and migrates for the first time to Brazil and back–a journey of more than 8,000 miles.
IMPORTANT: Messages from osprey experts
I haven’t seen the little guy yet this morning, but I would be very surprised if he survived the night. That sure was tough to watch yesterday, but that whole process is as much a part of the essence of being an Osprey as is eating a fish. It’s part of the life of Ospreys that was rarely seen before we started putting cameras in nests. As hard as it is, we should not label the behavior as mean or cruel. Being mean or cruel implies that there is intent to do harm just for harm’s sake. Those young were responding to a set of stimuli (very little food being delivered to the nest and the presence of a very small young) in a way that evolution has hard-wired into them. It helps ensure their survival. Nature is not cruel. It is harsh, unforgiving, and often random (had the little guy been born 1st, he would have been just as aggressive as was his sibling), but not cruel or mean.

Thanks Rob for bringing your knowledge and experience to help us all gain perspective here. We are all saddened by the events that unfolded before our eyes and it’s only natural for all of us to feel and express our emotions appropriately. There have been many issues pertaining to intervention which have been discussed amongst us all. There is no doubt in my mind that the right decision was made, to let nature take it’s course. By the way, that doesn’t equate to heartless, on the contrary, nobody feels worse about this then the apparent decision makers. I say apparent, because when all was said and done, and all the issues were properly weighed, there really weren’t any other options. It was clearly pointed out, by experts, that intervening at this stage could have spooked the whole nest to the point of losing all the young. If the little one was saved, and nursed back to health, what kind of a life would it have had, perhaps caged up in a zoo. I remember when I was younger I saw a golden eagle in captivity, caged behind a wire mesh. I could practically see it’s tears. As far as placing the little one in another nest, such a low probability of success would never have justified the possibility of spooking the nest. There’s a piece of me, however heavy hearted, that believes that perhaps it is better to be born free and die free. We mourn for the little one as we marvel at the wonders of nature.
Hello Paul,
Thanks for your query, and you have my admiration for persevering. We know very well how tough your job is, including dealing with an anxious public.
Our policy with our Bird Cams project is essentially “just say no” to pleas for interference. The behavior you are witnessing – while seemingly cruel and heartless to us – is natural for many kinds of birds, especially those that feed on variable, unpredictable food supplies. The little nestling does have a chance to survive, but if it does not then that result was “meant to be” by the nature of Osprey breeding strategy. The wonderful things about these nest cameras also sometimes yield the difficult things for us to watch. As you might know, we actually post a “siblicide alert” on some of our cams where we suspect the possibility exists.
I’m copying your note to Charles Eldermire, project leader for our Bird Cams. He may have some additional comments, and he would be the one to ask if we might be able to use your stored files for biological analysis.
Best wishes, and good luck,
John W. Fitzpatrick
Director, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
It’s also important to acknowledge that intervening can also cause problems of its own—depending on the ages of the birds in the nest, disturbing them can trigger an early fledge. We have restricted the scenarios in which we would even consider intervening to injuries or dangers that are explicitly human-derived. For example, 3 or 4 years ago we were alerted by viewers that one of the osprey chicks at the Hellgate Osprey nest was entangled in monofilament line. We consulted with our partners there (wildlife biologists, raptor researchers, raptor rehabbers) to determine if the monofilament was an issue, and if intervening was both likely to solve the issue AND not have bad effects on the other nestlings. In the end, a quick trip to the nest was scheduled via a bucket truck, the monofilament was removed, and the nestlings all eventually fledged. In that case, all of the permits were already in hand to be studying the ospreys, and we had already discussed how to approach issues in the nest.
Good luck to the young one—hope it all turns out well.
charles.

I’ve been to your site—great cam! And I noticed the runt in the nest. This is just normal Osprey reproduction. It happens all the time and you should not intervene. It’s tough to watch, but it’s how nature works. Ospreys almost always lay 3 eggs and on average fledge between 1 and 1.5 young each year. They stagger the hatch so there is a spread of ages in the young. That way, if food is short, the first-hatched (and therefore largest) will get enough food to survive while the smaller nest mates do not. If all three young were the same size and there was only enough food for 1 young, none of the young would get enough food and they would all die. If there’s lots of food, the smallest will eventually get fed and can survive. These nest cams can show some gut-wrenching scenes. The most infamous perhaps was one of the very first Osprey cams (on Long Island somewhere), where the smallest young died. One of the adults carried it out of the nest and after several minutes flew back into the nest and fed it to the other young. Waste-not-want-not at its goriest. At Hog Island up in Maine just last week a Bald Eagle came in and took the young out of the nest. Last year at another nest, cameras documented a Great-horned Owl taking young Ospreys out of a nest in NJ or MD. All of these things have been going on for millions of years and Ospreys are doing fine.

Then the fish went for a ride….
Within a minute or so, presumably Jane was feeding the kids…. bebe in front was snagging all the food unlil he fell over..
Then #2 was ready and willing to be filled up…. Jane obliged….
When Jane came to pop the lid on the cup, George left with the leftovers.

Just chillin’ ….
Seriously, George? Do we really need that stick?????
George stopped by to see if Jane needed anything… Supermom holding firm…
May be passing showers till 9pm, then around 1am. Clouds hang in throughout the morning, with likelihood of more rain from 2pm on, into the night. Temps tonight holding around 62-63; then, high 60s tomorrow.
Carol, we missed you today, on this important day!!! Glad you’re home.
Yeah… they expect me to show up at work… party poopers!
Just want to pick out the broken shells and toss them out…it will be hard to tell the next hatch and I think they’re a little uncomfortable for Jane and the kids!

Feeding by Jane
During this feeding..George was on the perch…baby on left got a lot of good pieces…baby on right ( which I think is the older one)..got none!
Although I like the decor “arrangement “ of mussel shell and rock weed …wonder what the other side of the nest looks like and why it’s favored for feedings
I know! I was just thinking that! Remove those empty shells!
@15:10…. George brought a fish…. Jane flew off on a break…
I’m not sure who is feeding them, because I did not see Jane fly in…. I’m not good enough to tell their beaks apart… I just know both chicks ate…

In my opinion, that’s George
Well… went back to 11:30 when it was Jane feeding from the sidelines and I’m more confused. I’m arguing with myself, so I’m going back to…. I don’t know…. could be Jane came back off right and snuck in … Throwing in the towel…. and they could use one!
Had to satisfy myself of how Jane got that fish…. right here, Jane is behind George … there’s 2 beaks on that fish. Then, it became obvious…. slo-mo helped. I can sleep now!
It was Jane…George took a few bites…thought he was going to feed the kids….he flew out and Jane started feeding them
So happy to get home and see #2 hatched this a.m.! And all the pictures and info to fill me in! I was at work all day and left phone home! It was torture! Hope #3 is soon, too.
ELAINE: Isabella is correct… bebe is French for baby. I don’t like just calling them 1, 2, 3…. Generally give them nicknames to tell them apart . I don’t intend for those names to stick, Just hope these first 2 are distinctively marked so we can tell them apart, since they will be so close in size!
btw… think I also called it shorty, the kid and maybe some other names…..
Feeding from the right
These bobble head sibs have been active good eaters from the start!
Hello everyone! Congratulations on chick #2 ♥️
Official hatch time is 6:12 am
I am so grateful the chicks are so close in age, this will help reduce the sibling rivalry.
Tomorrow is day 35 for egg #3 – talons crossed that it hatches tomorrow!

Hi All,
Well as usual this nest never ceases to surprise. I have never heard of eggs hatching so quickly. It’s always 2 or 3 days apart.
Now we just need to watch and see how Jane does with the babies. I hope she does well but I do hope she’ll let George have his turn because he does seem to like taking care of the babies, and he does a fantastic job at it.
Here’s hoping for a very good year at OZ. So many other nests I watch are getting only 1 or 2 hatches so let’s hope all 3 hatch here and they all fledge!
Paula, sometimes they do hatch a day apart, and once in a great while they will hatch on the same day, like at Dunrovin ranch this year in Montana, two eggs hatched 5 hours apart! There are a number of nests with only one chick this year and I was hoping that would not be the case this year for this nest. I think Jane is going to be a wonderful mother!
TWO chicks! 6:12 am. Sponsored by TaxReduction Serviceshttp://ospreyzone.com
Mary Anne…do you have the time of hatch?….I think 5:44?
It didn’t appear to be out of the shell all the way until about 6:10. Now we have to keep an eye on egg #3!
Isabella, I went back and looked again, the little one was out and free actually just seconds before 6:12.
Wow, another chick this morning. Hatched so quickly after #1🐣🐣. Very eggciting. Good luck to ALL!!
Mother’s work is never done
It’s like the stars aligned to give us a perfect day!….good night ospreyz….good night baby O…good night Jane….you deserve a rest!
Moonlight is almost like having ir….get some sleep 💤 Jane!
Beautiful sky!
Poor Jane… she kept trying to move that empty shell away, but it keeps rolling back… I think it’s under her now. Maybe shorty can use it for rain gear…
He he!
Beautiful Jane! You’ve had an eventful day today and done an amazing job! So glad I had an extra day off to witness your triumph…..
It looks like you’re in for bad weather. Cloudy thru the coming hours, with the probability of rain after midnight. Which will probably last throughout tomorrow. A muggy 76 now at 7:30, dropping to about 63 towards morning. Temps tomorrow mid-high 60s.
Keep our little bebe safe and dry, as well as the 2 eggberts.
Hello everyone. Congratulations Jane and George on your first hatch of the year! Jane is a pretty lady and will be a good mom to her family. Is bebe the name of the first chick? If so, that is a pretty name.
Hi Elaine, no, the chick doesn’t have a name yet, that won’t be for quite some time. Hopefully soon there will be a couple of more chicks to name down the road!
Think CarolV is using a different spelling for baby
Earlier, there was a fish showing off to the right. George may have been there, because shorty was tracking something and begging in that direction,
I don’t think George has sat on the nest most of the day. Has Jane been out since this morning?
@18:07- George may have picked up that earlier fish, cause this looks a bit like leftovers…. still yummy, I’m sure.
Jane topped off shorty…. everybody fed.
Carol, Jane has been on the nest since 9:54 am, that I have seen. Has anyone noticed her leave at all?
She went for a quick dip in the bay around 2:30
If I’m thinking about the same time…I also thought George was to the right….then he flew up to the nest
Congratulations George & Jane. The new chick is beautiful. Also, congrats to Carol V., Isabella and Moderator Maryanne. You have kept this stream going while many of us have drifted to a “clearer” view of nests in other states. Your photos and humor are sincerely a gift. This was my first cam experience and being local to Suffolk Cty., OZ (George especially) will always have my heart. Wonder if it will be a three chick challenge 2019 ????
I hope so, Marg! It would be so nice to have 3 chicks in that nest again!
Hi MaryAnne — This new hatch was so quick after #1. Never seen a sibling arrive that fast. Is this an unusual occurrence??
I’ve seen one hatch the next day. and two on the same day so it’s not all that unusual. But it certainly is a surprise! The Dunrovin nest in Montana had two hatch the same day this year, 5 hours apart!
Thank you Marg!😊
🐟….Jane feeds the chick…while George eats the bugs!
Yum!
Clean up on aisle 9
George is intent on those bugs!
Hello!…I’m down here!
Hellloooo!
Jane moved back the “baby gift” that George knocked back down
Move your butt George…trying to feed the chick 🐥
🐥🐟
That baby gift is a real push present…. as in- Could we push it right out of the nest????? It’s annoying and keeps getting shifted… too close to baby for me!
Yes, Isabella, George is eating those bugs,,,, protein! Does anyone remember him doing that before?
And bebe is getting fed…. way to go, Jane!
George delivered nice big headless fish @16:53
He was cleaning his beak when he spotted bugs and decided on dessert
Jane feeding chick..
all photos/cprt.OZ.com/spons.byTRS.com
No I do not remember him eating bugs…and I would think fish are enough protein…and I never found any info that they eat bugs
I’ve watched osprey cams since 2006. I have never seen them eat anything other than fish, even when fish are hard to find. There was a turtle brought in last year by a fledgling, to an Indiana nest. It crawled away and out of the nest. Twice I have seen crabs brought in by adults, they too escaped. I have seen photos of ospreys flying with eels. As far as bugs go, I have seen them pick them off their feet, but I don’t think they ate them. It was very interesting to watch George because he looked like he was picking them out of the nest. Did he swallow them or just pick them out and shake them off his beak? I don’t know!
It looked like he ate them…didn’t see him spit them out or shake them off….if he is eating them he’s going to gain extra weight….there are soooo many! Yuk!
They are rather creepy when so many are crawling about. But they do a great job cleaning up.
Moonlight is almost like having ir….get some sleep 💤 Jane!
Speaking of bugs… I was wondering about something…before the hatch, Jane seemed uncomfortable and moving around. Was thinking 🤔 was it due to the big beetles…or did she sense a hatch about to happen?
Congrats to Jane n George on their 1st born today…
George brought in one of his impossible sticks…..
He tried fitting it in front of Jane….
Just an observation (joking here)
but i think George and Jane need to call ORKIN or some other pest control….
WHY??? Oh, these?
photo-cprt.OZ.com/spons.byTRS.com
I agree…those black little creepy crawlers are just that creepy..I saw George come and clean out the shell…hug..
Feed was blacking out and “hiccuping “…somehow the egg shell got kicked to the curb….good thing cause it had a bunch of creepy crawlers in it…wonder if George is eating them?
Jane kept asking George for another fish for her and little O
What the?….George brings a baby gift
Really George!
Thankfully Jane got it up and over before it came down on the little guy…poor thing even stepped in the eggshell…..disregard first pic in “really George “
@14:45- George comes in with a fish- a live fish. It slithers down the slope and bebe has an introduction to fish…..
Jane tried to grab it, but couldn’t get a grip on it. She flew out.
George just stared and then grabbed the fish Jane had left.
bebe is reminding George that there is someplace to put that fish…
Jane came back.
She got the fish and ate the head herself.
Altho she was standing in the way, you could see that she did get some fish popped in the baby’s beak….
bebe held its head up for a long time! And got its point recognized…. so young, so amazing!

I didn’t even see a fish delivered today…anyone else?
I didn’t see one either. George has been gone since right before 10 am, I think.
Finally!….George and 🐟
The fish slid right under the chick….first feeding by Jane
Was hard to get good pics…every time Jane fed her …she blocked the view….baby got a lot of good bits
George kept looking at her…thought he was going to feed her
But Jane did after her dip in the bay…after all she must have been hot 🥵 being on the nest all that time
Wish George would show up….. Jane still seems a bit nervous.
Baby starting to flip around…
Always thought when you see “fluttering “ on the screen….means they are on the perch…..if George is, he is quiet….CarolV did you see a fish delivered?
When the cam came on this morning, George was there and they switched places on the nest at 6:49. George returned with a stick at 8:28. Jane flew off at 8:29. George took his place on the eggs. Jane dropped down from the perch at 9:54 and George left…and there he is right now!!
Everyone is very excited about the new chick! Can everyone please remember to put “Sponsored by TaxReduction Serviceshttp://ospreyzone.com” if you edit and crop the sponsor’s name out of your images. We are required to do this and I have been putting it on some of your images this morning. It would be helpful if you could remember to do this yourselves, thank you so much!
Sorry Mary Anne ….thought it was somehow doing it automatically
That’s ok! It is there at the top of the screen and will show up if you don’t crop it out, but if you crop it out, it’s gone and you have to add it to your message.

Studmuffin comes in for a turn….
Jane does a Houdini exit- now you see her, now you don’t! Video is skipping,,,
Sunday’s not so sunny…. started the day with showers…. hope the wind is a little quieter today.
“Raindrops keep fallin’ on my back….”
Pretty blue morning
Jane drops in and does a quick change with George…today is the day I picked for a hatch 🐣…let’s see if George becomes a Daddy O on Father’s Day!
Breakfish!
Can’t see the eggs 🙁
Incoming Jane…can see the top of one egg
Second course
George gives out a few halfhearted alerts…Jane comes…gives George a kick

George..move stuff in front!
Good night 💤 Jane…good night ospreyz!
Even the wind puts sticks on Jane! She bit at it, but the wind continued to blow it back and forth, tapping at her.
She finally bit the end and flipped the end up. The wind caught it and…. ba-bye , nice blond wood post modern with a Danish flair décor!
As I was driving home- around this time- the dark clouds came in so quickly and the wind gusts got stronger. I thought we would have a t-storm! Just as I got here, we had a few spits of rain….. that was it. All show, no follow through… not that I’m complaining!
The nest is swaying and George is pushing against the wind, trying to get to the eggs. Nicely ruffling his feathers….
A pic of eggies…. that white shell up front looks like another egg! There’s so much dried seaweed, I’m not sure we would see a pip.

I guess due to the wind they both were on the nest…taking turns on the eggs and waiting for a turn .
Jane got tired of waiting
George’s turn to wait
Off he goes
Bring home fish George!
Not sticks!
Jane’s turn for sticks and wait
Com’n George!
I’ll be back
Right back
Move George!
She lost her step
George keeping his balance
And keeping himself busy while Jane ignores him
Switch
George had a tough time getting down to the egg bowl
And Jane’s back
They were really blown around…had trouble holding on and keeping balance…just kept taking turns…did not see a fish 🐟
So far Jane’s on for the night
