Belle’s Journey
Written by Dr. Rob Bierregaard & Illustrated by Kate Garchinsky
Take flight with Belle, an osprey born on Martha’s Vineyard as she learns to fly and migrates for the first time to Brazil and back–a journey of more than 8,000 miles.
IMPORTANT: Messages from osprey experts
I haven’t seen the little guy yet this morning, but I would be very surprised if he survived the night. That sure was tough to watch yesterday, but that whole process is as much a part of the essence of being an Osprey as is eating a fish. It’s part of the life of Ospreys that was rarely seen before we started putting cameras in nests. As hard as it is, we should not label the behavior as mean or cruel. Being mean or cruel implies that there is intent to do harm just for harm’s sake. Those young were responding to a set of stimuli (very little food being delivered to the nest and the presence of a very small young) in a way that evolution has hard-wired into them. It helps ensure their survival. Nature is not cruel. It is harsh, unforgiving, and often random (had the little guy been born 1st, he would have been just as aggressive as was his sibling), but not cruel or mean.

Thanks Rob for bringing your knowledge and experience to help us all gain perspective here. We are all saddened by the events that unfolded before our eyes and it’s only natural for all of us to feel and express our emotions appropriately. There have been many issues pertaining to intervention which have been discussed amongst us all. There is no doubt in my mind that the right decision was made, to let nature take it’s course. By the way, that doesn’t equate to heartless, on the contrary, nobody feels worse about this then the apparent decision makers. I say apparent, because when all was said and done, and all the issues were properly weighed, there really weren’t any other options. It was clearly pointed out, by experts, that intervening at this stage could have spooked the whole nest to the point of losing all the young. If the little one was saved, and nursed back to health, what kind of a life would it have had, perhaps caged up in a zoo. I remember when I was younger I saw a golden eagle in captivity, caged behind a wire mesh. I could practically see it’s tears. As far as placing the little one in another nest, such a low probability of success would never have justified the possibility of spooking the nest. There’s a piece of me, however heavy hearted, that believes that perhaps it is better to be born free and die free. We mourn for the little one as we marvel at the wonders of nature.
Hello Paul,
Thanks for your query, and you have my admiration for persevering. We know very well how tough your job is, including dealing with an anxious public.
Our policy with our Bird Cams project is essentially “just say no” to pleas for interference. The behavior you are witnessing – while seemingly cruel and heartless to us – is natural for many kinds of birds, especially those that feed on variable, unpredictable food supplies. The little nestling does have a chance to survive, but if it does not then that result was “meant to be” by the nature of Osprey breeding strategy. The wonderful things about these nest cameras also sometimes yield the difficult things for us to watch. As you might know, we actually post a “siblicide alert” on some of our cams where we suspect the possibility exists.
I’m copying your note to Charles Eldermire, project leader for our Bird Cams. He may have some additional comments, and he would be the one to ask if we might be able to use your stored files for biological analysis.
Best wishes, and good luck,
John W. Fitzpatrick
Director, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
It’s also important to acknowledge that intervening can also cause problems of its own—depending on the ages of the birds in the nest, disturbing them can trigger an early fledge. We have restricted the scenarios in which we would even consider intervening to injuries or dangers that are explicitly human-derived. For example, 3 or 4 years ago we were alerted by viewers that one of the osprey chicks at the Hellgate Osprey nest was entangled in monofilament line. We consulted with our partners there (wildlife biologists, raptor researchers, raptor rehabbers) to determine if the monofilament was an issue, and if intervening was both likely to solve the issue AND not have bad effects on the other nestlings. In the end, a quick trip to the nest was scheduled via a bucket truck, the monofilament was removed, and the nestlings all eventually fledged. In that case, all of the permits were already in hand to be studying the ospreys, and we had already discussed how to approach issues in the nest.
Good luck to the young one—hope it all turns out well.
charles.

I’ve been to your site—great cam! And I noticed the runt in the nest. This is just normal Osprey reproduction. It happens all the time and you should not intervene. It’s tough to watch, but it’s how nature works. Ospreys almost always lay 3 eggs and on average fledge between 1 and 1.5 young each year. They stagger the hatch so there is a spread of ages in the young. That way, if food is short, the first-hatched (and therefore largest) will get enough food to survive while the smaller nest mates do not. If all three young were the same size and there was only enough food for 1 young, none of the young would get enough food and they would all die. If there’s lots of food, the smallest will eventually get fed and can survive. These nest cams can show some gut-wrenching scenes. The most infamous perhaps was one of the very first Osprey cams (on Long Island somewhere), where the smallest young died. One of the adults carried it out of the nest and after several minutes flew back into the nest and fed it to the other young. Waste-not-want-not at its goriest. At Hog Island up in Maine just last week a Bald Eagle came in and took the young out of the nest. Last year at another nest, cameras documented a Great-horned Owl taking young Ospreys out of a nest in NJ or MD. All of these things have been going on for millions of years and Ospreys are doing fine.

We just had a cloudburst in CUTCHOGUE- about 20-25 miles west of 0Z.
Supposed to be quick event with more rain likely after 9 o’clock
Watching to see if it makes it to OZ
Couldn’t tell on my little phone. Screen certainly doesn’t look 👀 better!
YES!…..I hear ☔️
Must have been a spritz !…..no change!…..maybe tonight 🌧?
Need a lot of 🌧!……last night was 98% humidity……or as my dad calls it….stupidity……felt like you could “wring out “ the air!……everything was so wet this morning…..thought maybe screen would be a little better
When I saw morning temperature was 74 and 78% humidity I knew we were in for a rough day
I almost don’t mind working! We have AC but I don’t at home!
Supper….than tucked in 💤
It’s looking like a cloudy night, with temps holding in the 70s… 72 around dawn. Cloudy morning, with sun/high clouds in afternoon; temps to 82. They are teasing us with possible showers /t-storms late day- 5pm on… Could we just get a cloudburst over the camera lens?
ISABELLA:
Up to ADMIN SHELLI…….There were 3 chicks…. ……. But I did submit 3…… I had briefly called #3 Jonny– as in Jonny-come -lately. Also there is an OLD song- Irish -… called “Jonny, We Hardly Knew Ya” So I suggested Jonny for #3
I was tempted to suggest Pooper and Splatter, but chicks have done this every year, the little buggers!
Those are great names for the chicks. I am so glad they are healthy and growing.
Osprey construction.corp………nestorations……privacy screens….nestscaping ….new build….frustration nest. Serving Long Island ,snow birds and surrounding areas.
We will make your nest stand out from the rest!
They may be outstanding but better watch your conversations. They will probably be BUGGED!
Tee hee!!…..for creepy crawlers….call Orkin!
I glanced at the screen and wondered why there was a fishhead floating around….. just poop on George…. {:*))
Shifting shadows and I see different things…. clearly too much imagination….
This looks like a baby bird……
cprt:ospreyzone.com/sponsbyTRS.com
With open beak!
Or maybe a lizard
Shadow of George flying in… must be a delivery because Jane and kids go right…..
George spends a few minutes pushing and pulling at the fortress …….
Chick surveys Dad’s handiwork…..
Chick still eating….
Other kid watching sailboat parade…. sorry to miss that!
Chick can barely waddle away and the beak is still coming at him!
Two “little” chickies sitting in a row……. feed them some fish and watch how they grow!!!!!
It’s been a pleasant day… lower humidity and more sun than I expected…
No lens cleaner like last year? So sad we can’t see the chicks too well!
I believe it broke and the logistics of getting up the 60′ tower made repair unlikely. Was a great idea whie it lasted!
Thanks…I’ll pray for rain and a good south wind!
Could be wrong…don’t think we had it last year….was pre-Jane?
May have been previous year… I thought last year wasn’t it but I’m rarely sure about yesterday
Sparrow
Mombrella Jane
George
I loved these shots of Squirmy preening!!
I still feel the need to apologize for that name…. it was meant as a nickname…. and the main reason I have resisted any nicknames this year!!!!! Glad we’re working on names early!
Looks like a clearer lens but a large clump of possibly seaweed obstructing the view! *** SIGH*****
Here it comes….. Believe that’s our Georgie doing us dirty….
Yes…that was George….adding insult to injury!
🐥1 is 18 days old
Chick is trying to see us….hello!
Maybe s/he surveying where to aim…. “Hmmmmmm.. is that a clear spot???”
Went back to last year to find something non-poop fazed…
…………… Early morning delivery with George and Jane…
Handsome George
Always love a wing shot
Our beautiful Jane and those gorgeous tail feathers……….. and G arriving with a gift
Who could forget these???
The swim goggles were the best!….easier to see fish 🐟 under water!
I was going thru the older shots, trying to delete some in the hope of speeding up my editing tool….. It’s HARD! Parting with old friends I rarely see but …..
Well, they’re in there……. pretty blue morning
It’s overcast and muggy and for a while, it looked like it might rain– but not on the radar. 73 now, may get to 78 late afternoon, with clouds and an occasional pop of sun for the rest of the day and overnight.
ISABELLA….. are you working on that rain dance?
I managed to come up with names, with a little humor behind them, but I submitted 3….. don’t forget our little guy
Can we do three?
#2
.
#2
#2 chick….or #2 on the screen?
Chick — forgot pic
George took a live fish up to the perch, I guess to ‘stop it from moving’ and it fell off the perch into the next. BTW Big Dino was home decorating. I guess he/she got it honestly!
That’s not what happened!! Jane took the fish from George at the right front of the nest and then flew around to the left back of the nest with the fish, snagging it on the wood when she landed. She then grabbed the fish again and hopped to the right side of the nest.
Right about now, the only names I can think of are Casper and Phantom! Not serious suggestions, btw, but I don’t feel like I even know these chicks…. Come from the shadows, little guys!
Could we get some rain, Mom Nature!!!!!!!!!
My computer is running at a glacial pace…… my editing feature refuses to edit and facebook is barely responding…… don’t know if it’s me or further issues like facebook had yesterday… for some reason, that had affected my editing, too.
It’s just wrong to do this to a parent! Time for potty training!
Another warm day… 84 now under clear skies. Looks like a cool front coming thru, with some clouds and dropping to 65 about 6am. Mostly sunny tomorrow with high about 78.
♥️♥️ JUST A REMINDER ♥️♥️
If you’d like to make name suggestions for the chicks please do so this week. Round 1 ends Sunday 7/14 at midnight.
You can email your suggestions to:
OspreyZoneFun@gmail.com
Will start brainstorming !
ADMIN SHELLI…. will we pick single names for each chick or will we vote on pairs ( or triples)?
Hi Carol…I thought I’d just list the names individually and everyone can vote on their favorite two. I hope that sounds ok?
Are we not naming #3 in his memory?
I like the idea of the individual names..
♥️
Hi Shelli. I haven’t been checking in often. We lost a chick? I know and saw 2.
Was out of town for 5 days. Came back to find the young ones are huge. Amazing growth!
Good morning ospreyz!……..you have to really want to see the fish!
To Jane,George, 🐥🐥s and all your osprey friends!
Wow! Good post, Isabella! Especially love the fish flag!
CarolV 😊
Well…. you can tell there’s a fish…..and the sun’s coming up
Did lens get another hit or is it condensation????? Time will tell..
And no sign of rain before Sat. or Sun.
Eating again….
Moveable feast…….
I’m off to work… yes, on a holiday, poor me!……………..Enjoy your day!
–
Hmmmmmm… That yummy looking glob just left/center/top of frame looks new, doesn’t it? Got us again?
OMG CarolV!…..looks like they had their own “explosives “🎆……sorry you have to work 🙁…..have a nice day!
What a great day for our osprey family…..good night ospreyz!……fireworks other side of bay
Fly free!
Another winner!
😊
It was daddy and me(x2) time…. @19:38, George brought in a fish and Jane barely acknowledged it… it was all daddy time to feed the kiddos.
George makes up for the lost fish…( see prior posts)…..Jane jumps on it!
🐥🐥s give him a tongue lashing!
Before they waddle over to mama Jane
Hi cuties!
Supper….George feeds chicks….then has a romantic dinner with Jane
He’s such a Romeo!
FISH OVERBOARD!…..George brings fish….Jane goes to take it….fish flips out of the nest!…..tail first………..sponsor: tax reduction services.com
They went to the edge and looked….Jane almost lost her balance
While George was thinking……..
Still looking……still waiting…..George flew off at Jane’s request….didn’t see him return with fish
Up close and personal…………
Still 84 and muggy….. clear skies overnight but only dropping to 66. Sunny most of tomorrow, high of 84
Have a good day tomorrow…. lots of family and fun and bbque!
Special good wishes to all servicemen and the families that support them ( and basically serve with them!)
Sorry about that… my editing program has been acting up!
wow, scary to see the babes looking so close to the edge from cam vantage point, George, please redecorate front of nest! Maybe take the boulders from the back?!
I noticed on one nest I watch here, the babies are looking outward, too. I think it looks worse from our perspective.
George doing his best to provide shade for the babies.
Sleeping 💤 babies to gobble gobble kids in minutes! Jane can’t move fast enough!
Jane look 👀 ing frazzled! No time to primp when the gavonne twins are hungry!
See, Isabella! You expanded my vocabulary!
😊
Mom AND popbrellas!! Smart babies! No crowding!
This was sooo cute!
LOL!
I watched this feeding… they tag teamed Jane…. she kept backing up….thought they were going to push her off the edge!…..she had to regain her balance twice!
Yes! It looked like someone has sped up the film….! Her head was bobbing so fast!
Good morning OZ family! Wish that the handy dandy miracle lens washer could be turned on, it’s so difficult to see! Happy, safe 4th to all! xo
Don’t you just want to get out the windex and towels? For a change I ‘m rooting for rain 🌧!
Hi PattyK and CarolV…….I’m doing a rain 🌧 dance……..dance like nobody’s watching! Lol
Beautiful sunrise……George brings fish……then takes it away
George brings fish back….Jane takes it…..feeds chicks
Getting so big!
8 o clock feeding…..9 o’clock shade
The shady lady !!
YES!…..a nice cool fish 🎣
While Jane tops off 🐥1……🐥2 has a chin wag with George
The Irish ☘️ twins
Hard to tell by the pic…..George is feeding Jane
The family that shades together….stays together!
(knock.knock. knock) Helloooooo….we know you’re in there!! Haze is bad today. Another direct hit or the angle of the sun?
GM from the twilight- I mean Ospreyzone!
Osprey tails….family portrait
Good night 😴 ospreyz!
There is an ever changing view in the nest, between the 2 nestorators…
Does anyone else see a fish face?
cpt:OZ.com/sponsbyTRS.com
Yes!
@19:44… ANOTHER fish!
………George lets Jane take this one……………………. one kiddo begs for a few bites and… done. The other didn’t wake up…
Sure there are plenty of leftovers if the look for a snack later… if George leaves it..
It was a warm and MUGGY day… still 82 but feels worse. Cloud cover will keep heat in so may be 69 near dawn….
Tomorrow shows morning lightly cloudy with sun in the afternoon.. a little cooler with highs just hitting 80
It’s going to be challenging telling these two apart, since the haze makes them hard to see. I hope when their feathers come in, they are distinctively marked!
Sometimes it’s hard to tell Jane and George apart due to haze!
@16:33- George brings a large, whole fish and turns it over to Jane
….. The kids ate well……
………Jane played tug-the-guts with one of the shorties…
When George came to pick up the leftovers- and have his snack- he stood and watched them disappearing. He tried getting some of the dropped pieces, but Jane grabbed that and popped it in a kiddo’s mouth!
Poor George tried taking the last few inches of tailfin and couldn’t even get That!
@17:49…. George is in with another fish… headless this time!
….He stood for several minutes before Jane came over…. “Do you want me to take that?”…. “Nope…..”
First one chick, then the other came over to Pop and ate….. and ate…. and ate…..
Jane wandered through…..
The kids were practically falling over with those full crops! And looking a little glassy eyed…
George ate some, then turned it over to Jane…..
And look! A little booger is creeping up behind her! He had just a few bites before flopping down again. Jane had a nice peaceful feed after that.
George did an evening workout.
Almost looks like Jane is sporting new tail feathers!
CarolV and Isabella, thank you for all of your pictures and stories. I watch a lot but still appreciate all that you do, I love scrolling through and seeing the progress of the family. Kammy
Thank you Kammy! 🥰
TY, Kammy….. I ‘m glad you’re enjoying it all.
And, Isabella, I may not say it often, but I appreciate all your posts. I’ve been missing so much this year.
CarolV….ditto!…..love your post as well….at times you make me chuckle…eg. Fish, new or used….wrong again…the street I live on……you’re my ospreyz sister from the east side of the island!
Breakfish……no one seemed in a hurry to eat….maybe they ate earlier
This is either George bringing back same fish or new fish
This breakfish was received with more enthusiasm
🐥🐥s slowly inched their way up to be fed
They ate a long time….then this little butterball decided to have more….than his sib joined him………sponsor: tax reduction services.com
George is so handsome even though the schmutz….
Looks like Jr angling for some fish 🐠
Is there a lens washing system still installed on the camera? I recall one being installed and was actually used I think last year or year before, it worked great. Is it there but they just haven’t used it yet or was it removed?
I don’t know when it last worked…but it was wonderful….still remember it coming on one day and seeing Gracie’s shocked expression!…..would be great to have it work again!
Supper fish
George must be grooming on the perch

Wiggles it off….then BAM!….adds extra flavor to George’s snack!
Beautiful sky peeking through…….good night ospreyz!
Shelli and Mary Anne…..when are we naming the 🐥🐥s
Hi Isabella, Shelli and I are working on the Name the Chicks contest now and we will let everyone know the details soon. Thanks!
Just thought I would point people in the direction of this blog…..they have some awesome pics….these are a couple from banding the chicks
I was just gonna text “osprey diapers when I read the next frame!
OMG CarolV….that was going to be my caption til the ps! Lol!
Jane is settling in and it’s getting harder to fit these two under her.
They get disturbed and then jostle each other, until they settle in again…
Looks like it’s gonna be dry for the next few days. 76 now, under clear skies. Clouds coming in later, with temps holding at 67.
Tomorrow, mostly cloudy with temps. to 80.
Jane was obsessed with this clump of dried seaweed….. she tried it in several places and kept repositioning…. like me when I move a chair!
Fortunately, George came in and put her mind on something better…
19:05- George comes in with a good sized headless fish…
…….Jane takes it and feeds the shorties.
…………..Jane had some herself.
………………..And when everyone else was done, George was back to claim the leftovers…. he decided to stay home to eat.
Look at this handsome chicky! Always be cute to me, even the dino stage….
cpt:ospreyzone.com/sponsbyTaxReductionServices.com
And is that the sea robin head he’s using for a pillow?????
cpt:ospreyzone.com/sponsbyTaxReductionServices.com
I find the sea robin head quite amusing!
@16:57- George moved a fish tail from the hidden zone….
…. He started feeding kids
…..Jane moved in and grabbed the fish— “My job!”
… George moved to perch while Jane took over the feeding.
They just ate about a half hour ago…… but here comes a fish
14 minutes later….Jane and 🐥 decide to eat
Love when dad gives mom a piece…..mom gives it to 🐥!
They had a long lazy family picnic 🧺
Jane provides the shade
Again, I’m on lunch and the gang is eating!
Jane is moving fast! Hungry kids
Between the badly positioned camera, the out of focus lens and the ps on the lens you can barely see anything! But, a couple of people are writing novels everyday!! One of them said she didn’t have scrollback so does she watch the video stream all day?? How?
If you are referring to me, I said I don’t have 12 hour scroll back. I have 4 hour. I post mostly early morning feeding and late evening. If CarolV goes to work she sometimes ask other viewers to post pics. So I take time and try to oblige to help fill her in. I post for the viewers who may find it easier to scan pics .
Yes the camera’s position isn’t ideal. We don’t have zoom, panning or ir. Other cameras do experience ps schmear , spider webs , etc. I know it’s frustrating to watch a blurry screen, but I truly don’t understand the viewers that complain about the camera and/ or Jane. There are many other nests to watch. I’m sure nobody needs more stress in their life!
Isabella… don’t bother. Some people are just joy suckers… OZ is my nest of choice since it’s the closest cam to where I live. And of course, the question, as you alluded to, is why is anyone watching who is bothered by so much?
Thank you for your diplomatic answer!
CarolV ❤️
I checked cam around 6:50 pm, chicks are kinda napping , one kept popping their furry little head up, so cute. Yes the cam angle could be improved, the hoarder design by George isn’t helping either. Let’s hope with a good rain wash that the lens is cleared up. Otherwise enjoy the show or move on , the internet is a wonderful thing !
Trinity 😊
Jane, please, please move that WALL you just erected!!!
She’s getting tired of the pressures of fame , sorry Jane we’re not going anywhere !
😝😎😂🤣😁‼️❗️
Catch of the day!…….fresh whole fish that flips down to nest bowl….George retrieves it….gives 🐥🐥 a couple bites….Jane takes over….bye George!
Jane nestles them in for an early morning 💤
Mike and Ike still have their stripes………..sponsor:tax reduction services.com
I, of course, noticed the log in our view. Never stays clear for long!
First, George moved this from the side…..
Then, he went out to get more…..
Adds a thin one, but kindly took away one of the bigger ones.
Jane adds her touch.
I think George delivered on the right, because Jane got excited and is now feeding the shorties
Jane did a short feed and immediately covered the chicks. We had a short rain storm with distant thunder a bit ago. Maybe heading OZ way?
And there it is…. hard to see, but rain…
These birds are amazing!
Sky just opened up where I am….hopefully will rain where the nest is and clean screen!
Here comes George!
Heads up!
Branch
Sea robin head!
Dad!
George is on duty and the kids are begging…..
Jane is back and sitting on the chicks…. she must feel something in the atmosphere. Right around that time, it was raining and thundering at my house, south and west of here.
George dropped back in and decided to move a piece of something…. Jane tried to object, but lost.
Danger is passed. Jane is up and lobbying for fish… wheep, wheep….
Thanks for showing your face….butt…..
.
at least it’s not aimed at us!
I think the family went to the World Pride March in NYC as allies. I’m sure they’ll be home later.
Cute!
Nestorating IMPROVED the view! George is clearing out the center…
After he struggled to bring this stick in and finally found a place for it off lower right, he went around moving things to his satisfaction…
x
A bird and his castle—- nestle?
George staying home with his fish. Looks like he’s trying to interest the little dino, but no takers.
Found a willing beak! A few bites…
George flew up to perch and Jane came for leftovers and ate…
Then a dino came to get fed… I’m thinking this is #2 as she still has a punk blonde crewcut where the other was just bald
It’s really hard to tell them apart, with the haze and them living on the right porch.
BTW- dino had to “gulp” to try to move bites down into that crowded crop!
OH, GOODY! Some more sticks for the pile! This was Jane with back-to-back deliveries. George is over there eating.
George has his fish. He fed the invisible mouths off to the right a few bites, but mostly stood around holding his fish.
Good morning Jane….ospreyz!……no rain to clear the view!….what happened to the window washer?
Breakfish…..nice whole fish 🐟
With Jane and George alerting…intruder flew right over!
Let’s eat!
George brings in another fish….quietly picks on it…..some time goes by and one of the chicks decides he can fit in a little more
After a ps….other chick wants some too!
It was a great idea that only worked for a while…
The pooper strikes again!
Almost artistic as it washes down the lens……………………………………
We can only hope for some of the possible rain to come later today………..
@5:11… Breakfish!
Intruder followed George right to nest and over…..
Good sized flounder well received…
And everybody ate
Might still get a shower….hard to see in pic…..flash of lightning on the left……💤 ospreyz!
I had some rain just after the camera shut down…. not a lot and didn’t seem to improve the view…… and a junior added to the schmutz this a.m.
GN, Jane…..
It looks like the rain has missed us. A while ago, it got very dark and windy at my house, at the same time ch.12 weather was reporting hail further west on the Island.! Glad OZ didn’t get that!
75 now at 9pm. Looks like partly cloudy till about 3am, then clear skies. Temp drops to 67.
Sunny in the morning, clouding over in the afternoon. There was talk of spot showers, but not showing on the app now. Temps hitting low 80s
@19:25— George brought in a guppy..
You could tell it was a whole fish, as the gills showed when Jane started pulling at it….
Both kids ate… #2 was the most forward… kept grabbing chunks aimed at 1….. scooted around 2 to get closer to Jane and was fed
Jane was about to feed this piece to the kids, then gulped it herself, It was the tail…
About 6mins. to finish it
@19:53- George brings a large, headless fish… Jane barely noticed, so George started eating…
When she showed interest and stood, George vamoosed!
@20:31- George came back and Jane moved quickly, this time! Everybody ate
Let me OUT!…. I’ll behave!
Pin cushion time! Feathers a’poppin’….
