Belle’s Journey
Written by Dr. Rob Bierregaard & Illustrated by Kate Garchinsky
Take flight with Belle, an osprey born on Martha’s Vineyard as she learns to fly and migrates for the first time to Brazil and back–a journey of more than 8,000 miles.
IMPORTANT: Messages from osprey experts
I haven’t seen the little guy yet this morning, but I would be very surprised if he survived the night. That sure was tough to watch yesterday, but that whole process is as much a part of the essence of being an Osprey as is eating a fish. It’s part of the life of Ospreys that was rarely seen before we started putting cameras in nests. As hard as it is, we should not label the behavior as mean or cruel. Being mean or cruel implies that there is intent to do harm just for harm’s sake. Those young were responding to a set of stimuli (very little food being delivered to the nest and the presence of a very small young) in a way that evolution has hard-wired into them. It helps ensure their survival. Nature is not cruel. It is harsh, unforgiving, and often random (had the little guy been born 1st, he would have been just as aggressive as was his sibling), but not cruel or mean.

Thanks Rob for bringing your knowledge and experience to help us all gain perspective here. We are all saddened by the events that unfolded before our eyes and it’s only natural for all of us to feel and express our emotions appropriately. There have been many issues pertaining to intervention which have been discussed amongst us all. There is no doubt in my mind that the right decision was made, to let nature take it’s course. By the way, that doesn’t equate to heartless, on the contrary, nobody feels worse about this then the apparent decision makers. I say apparent, because when all was said and done, and all the issues were properly weighed, there really weren’t any other options. It was clearly pointed out, by experts, that intervening at this stage could have spooked the whole nest to the point of losing all the young. If the little one was saved, and nursed back to health, what kind of a life would it have had, perhaps caged up in a zoo. I remember when I was younger I saw a golden eagle in captivity, caged behind a wire mesh. I could practically see it’s tears. As far as placing the little one in another nest, such a low probability of success would never have justified the possibility of spooking the nest. There’s a piece of me, however heavy hearted, that believes that perhaps it is better to be born free and die free. We mourn for the little one as we marvel at the wonders of nature.
Hello Paul,
Thanks for your query, and you have my admiration for persevering. We know very well how tough your job is, including dealing with an anxious public.
Our policy with our Bird Cams project is essentially “just say no” to pleas for interference. The behavior you are witnessing – while seemingly cruel and heartless to us – is natural for many kinds of birds, especially those that feed on variable, unpredictable food supplies. The little nestling does have a chance to survive, but if it does not then that result was “meant to be” by the nature of Osprey breeding strategy. The wonderful things about these nest cameras also sometimes yield the difficult things for us to watch. As you might know, we actually post a “siblicide alert” on some of our cams where we suspect the possibility exists.
I’m copying your note to Charles Eldermire, project leader for our Bird Cams. He may have some additional comments, and he would be the one to ask if we might be able to use your stored files for biological analysis.
Best wishes, and good luck,
John W. Fitzpatrick

It’s also important to acknowledge that intervening can also cause problems of its own—depending on the ages of the birds in the nest, disturbing them can trigger an early fledge. We have restricted the scenarios in which we would even consider intervening to injuries or dangers that are explicitly human-derived. For example, 3 or 4 years ago we were alerted by viewers that one of the osprey chicks at the Hellgate Osprey nest was entangled in monofilament line. We consulted with our partners there (wildlife biologists, raptor researchers, raptor rehabbers) to determine if the monofilament was an issue, and if intervening was both likely to solve the issue AND not have bad effects on the other nestlings. In the end, a quick trip to the nest was scheduled via a bucket truck, the monofilament was removed, and the nestlings all eventually fledged. In that case, all of the permits were already in hand to be studying the ospreys, and we had already discussed how to approach issues in the nest.
Good luck to the young one—hope it all turns out well.

I’ve been to your site—great cam! And I noticed the runt in the nest. This is just normal Osprey reproduction. It happens all the time and you should not intervene. It’s tough to watch, but it’s how nature works. Ospreys almost always lay 3 eggs and on average fledge between 1 and 1.5 young each year. They stagger the hatch so there is a spread of ages in the young. That way, if food is short, the first-hatched (and therefore largest) will get enough food to survive while the smaller nest mates do not. If all three young were the same size and there was only enough food for 1 young, none of the young would get enough food and they would all die. If there’s lots of food, the smallest will eventually get fed and can survive. These nest cams can show some gut-wrenching scenes. The most infamous perhaps was one of the very first Osprey cams (on Long Island somewhere), where the smallest young died. One of the adults carried it out of the nest and after several minutes flew back into the nest and fed it to the other young. Waste-not-want-not at its goriest. At Hog Island up in Maine just last week a Bald Eagle came in and took the young out of the nest. Last year at another nest, cameras documented a Great-horned Owl taking young Ospreys out of a nest in NJ or MD. All of these things have been going on for millions of years and Ospreys are doing fine.

George is back with tail piece…… Soggy Jane takes off….
George tries to feed Jr… couldn’t tell if kid got any, since G stood in the way, but the kid pooped out…
When Jane came back, G fed her then finished off the tail….
George fished between storm cells. Unfortunately, just as he got to the nest @16:14, rain started again.
Jane shifted just enough so we got a peek at Jr…………. but George had to go
I’ve been hearing(feeling) distant grumbles… glad they are not over me! Storms are moving from the NW and it looks like an organized batch. Dry may be a while…..
George stopped back, but still raining……. Jane’s not budging. G ate some of the fish before taking off.
Rain……..
George was yelling at the skies and that big white swath of feathers was waving above Jr…. who kept nipping at them! Too cute!
Jr is learning,,,,,,,,,,,,, neck getting stronger and the beak popped open when Jane’s beak appeared…..
George digs a fishtail out of the pantry……
He starts to eat as Jane drops down….. she claimed it and finished it off………………………………………………. down the hatch!
And again Baby gets nothing!
There’s a cold front heading our way… Hopefully cutting this wretched humidity!……………… Possibility of t-storms, random, beginning this afternoon ; increasing into the evening…
After just a few hours, you wonder how that baby fit in an egg!!!!!!
George trades for a turn………………….. Jane heads out
Workin’ on that bobble!
@09:25…. another big fish……
George waits, as Jane decides to fly out…..
George moves toward the target and eats some fish himself… making small pieces. Think he was waiting for some movement, but bebe was quiet.
Jane comes back and George tries feeding her…..
She moves over and sits on egg cup, just when kid starts moving……………………….. George was waiting patiently on nest with the fish..
Early days……. parenting is rusty…..
George trying…….. He feeds Jane and when she turns away, he reaches for little one…..
He tried again in a bit, but couldn’t see if any reached the little beak. Still early….no worries
Jane took a short walk to stretch those legs………………… George finished off that fish.
George already thinking about building those baby rails!
Welcome little baby, let the summer begin!!!!
Happy Day Happy Day!
Let us all PRAY that this chick and any others stay well and healthy. It’s been an Extremely BAD year for osprey nests!
Fingers, toes and eyes crossed!
Oh wait, can’t watch the nest with eyes crossed, maybe just fingers and toes!
I know…. bad enough when you know a reason, but that loss at Boulder Cty, Fairgrounds was devastating in its suddenness. Everything crossed…
Congratulations All. Love that George & Jane…Great job.
Much success going forward!!♥︎
Welcome Chick #1!! Seen all the way out of the shell at 5:44 am.
Wow..what great news…..I had little hope for egg one…silly me this is the wonder nest….
Happy news just before the 4th of July!!!! Congratulations to George and Jane for their hard work especially with the intruders they have seen during this season.
YaY!!!!! Wonderful!!
Oh Wow I feel like a Grandma again God Bless!
hahaha! Know what you mean!
This is amazing. Thanks. I can’t tell if there are two babies or just one. I see the two eggs have hatched but only one baby.
Hi Rob, look closer, there is one chick and an unhatched egg still.
👍. Thanks
Proud Papa………….
Junior is here!
George meets Junior…
George went right out fishing….. he brought a big one @05:43…….
Jane took it and started picking at it and kept glancing at Bebe. Then George went to sit on the chick and Jane took off with the fish.
Out of the shell
this picture is a keeper…Thank you
Who’s turn is it to sit on the eggs?……rock paper scissors
Good night Jane 😴
@19:48…… George came in with a fish. Jane came over and G went to the eggs. Jane held the fish briefly, then flew to perch, leaving the fish.
About 45mins. later, J flew down and nibbled at fish. G came over, took the fish and had a sweet feeding session with Jane…
At 9pm. fireworks began. George took off like a shot……………
Jane came down to sit on the eggs. There were some more flashes and pops, but fortunately not many… At least there was a pretty moon to settle down under…..
@17:03…. Back to the old method…… Jane sings and dances as George brings a large headless fish.
No hesitation as she takes it and goes……….
And George settles in.
Jane is back……
Once again, we play the game…..
@13:39…. incoming fish and Jane says no, thanks.
George must have been followed, because J&G were alarming…… but Jane left after that and G headed for eggies…… leaving that fish in a dubious spot…
A new layer to the game…… George flies out…..
Jane drops down from the perch…. oh, look, a fish…….and takes off…………………..
Are they having a spat? No, that doesn’t make sense… he was feeding her……… who knows……………………………….
And George comes back……………… makes me wonder if he knows she took it……..
G out….
Jane is home……. tummy full of baked fish….
Eggie check…
Hi All,
I’ve been checking in off and on and to me it seems like Jane is messing with the eggs a lot, like there might be some movement going on with them. Fingers Crossed!
Also, what ever came about putting the comment section on the top of the page? It took me forever to scroll to the bottom this time!
Both adults are turning and fluffing and I can’t decide if they’re doing it more or if I’m noticing more in anticipation! We are all “hanging on the edge of the nest” !!!!! Pip. pip. pip!
Maybe change my cheer to hatch, hatch, hatch,,,,, too many spots to expect to see that pip!
Egg rolling
I’m rooting for a double hatch on the 4th! It’s within the guidelines for hatch times and it would be so fun! Naming would be patriotic!
JUst 2 pics of G&J…
That would be fun! 🇺🇸🐣🐣
That would be wonderful…..
It looks like George was on the nest all night….. checked thru till couldn’t see him and there he was when there was enough light to check…
GM, George……
Hi, Jane, you little stay-out!
I had t-storms, nice noisy ones, and some rain about 10-11pm Checked and didn’t see any flashes out by OZ
And another fish, no thank you, day……..G came in @7:37 and Jane retreated to the right corner….G took off.
George is back and leaves fish on edge of nest…….
Jane still not interested and flies off without fish…….. George comes back and takes a few bites of fish when he gets pulled to his eggies…
Egg check…….. both parents seem to be turning them a lot…..
And here it is……. Jane needs pampering! George is feeding her again!
The lady got her point across………………
Took about 20 mins and they finished the fish between them
Good night Jane…..pip today?….hard to tell with these spotted eggs
💤
George brings some grasses………………… Minutes later, he delivers a FISH HEAD!……. This was odd, but Jane was happy.
Fish head fish head roly poly fish head 🎼
Eat them up yum🎼🎼🎼
I think everyone knows that ?song? except me!
it is a classic about 30 years ago..if not more…sang it to my kids..Ha
Ah…. my son was 21 30yrs, ago…. slightly beyond fish head songs. Sorry I missed it.
My 2 oldest where in a pre school parade wearing fish head hats. Can never see a fish head and not think of that song!
Right now Jane is on the nest yapping away
🐟
Random bands of storms rotating through, like yesterday…. hit or miss.
Just having showers with distant thunder at my house. Those clouds across the bay probably part of that system.
Temp hovering close to 70 most of the night but humidity rising from about 84%n now to 94% by morning….. I’m dragging already………………………………………………….
WOW! George made up for Jane’s hunger strike this morning! @17:07, he delivered a WHOLE monster dinnerfish! Big fat head and all!
It seemed like Jane had been doing a lot of vocalizing today and it was finally getting to me. I was just checking in to adjust the sound when Moby Dick arrived…..
George was backing up as he stood and stepped on one end of this stick…. the look was priceless…
Jane came in after a long break….. out one door; in the other.
What the WHAT!…..funny!
So beautiful!
Neighbor is keeping busy… think they shooed off the last batch and are working on the next…
AW yes love that shot thanks for all your pics
YW!
What a view!….clouds have been beautiful lately!
Jane was alarming and George came to back her up. He’s still carrying that fish and he offers some to Jane….
Well, guess who shows up………………………………… Hey, rude dude! You’re spoiling a moment!
And he swung around for a second swoop…
Happy to say, the osprey canoodling resumes for more than a few minutes……… so cute!
George finished up and headed for the eggies but decided he was going. At least Jane had some fish and some romance!
That was so sweet!
Hi Carol..as always great shots…betting on 2nd to hatch July 4th. 36th day….no later then July 6….Thank you as always for pictures..
YW!
Alarming together…then George picks on fish
Decides to share with Jane….they have a sweet bonding moment
Attempts to eat the tail while Jane keeps lookout
Gives up on tail….sits on eggs a few minutes….then takes off…..no alarm, just decided to go…..after a moment of bewilderment…Jane takes egg duty
Men!
It’s been an odd day all around… Jane was not herself. I guess osprey can have an upset stomach or its equivalent
I wonder if they hear the chicks trying to come out
Take 2 on breakfish @11:51………………. George brings back the baked fish…………….
Again, she doesn’t come for it….. she just keeps calling……Something is bugging her.
She finally stands up but makes a sudden leap out.
So George again puts aside the fish and takes eggie duty…
Jane hit the perch at 12:34.
George waited a few minutes, then got up to pick up his fish. He checked toward perch before taking off.
Jane popped down.
Eggie check…. that one spot looks suspicious but the danged eggs are so spotted I’m not sure…
Jane telling George she wants a break….as usual not listening….picks on fish…Jane takes off….George takes a few minutes to decide between eggs and fish …tries to get in last word, but Jane is gone!
@09:48…. George brings breakfish but not all goes as planned…..
Jane is not interested…… She’d rather chat with George and watch something going on down the beach…….George just leaves the fish and goes to his eggies…
Oh, well, maybe this was the problem…. needed to make space?
Nope……. George finally says…. well, if you’re not ready…… and he goes!
………………………………………………..but Jane was right behind him!
Fortunately, G was right back and left the fish behind him as he took back the eggs…
If life was just that easy!
George takes his baked fish to go…………………….. Jane comes in….
Happy July!
Your morning egg check. x2
Morning, Jane!
George comes to chat…. Jane decides to go… guess he told her fishing wasn’t on the plan for now….
The fog filled in in about 10 mins.
Jane is back after a good break’
Our friendly pest visited. Jane was alarming. Then what was probably him flew out over the bay. Took another pass near nest as Jane screamed at him…..
Dinnerfish @18:48…… George comes in that corner again, getting in the way of pics.
Jane was very slow to come for the fish. George just left it; he had eggies to get to….. Jane took her time, even after she got the fish. I had seen a shadow go over, but no one alarmed….Maybe a seagull.
Jane shows off the fish as she goes…..
Well, the big storm was on time….. just too pooped to pour by the time it got here. Was fine with Jane! Over almost before it started.
George is shining in the sunlight……..
And a quick egg check…..
Jane is watching the neighbors from down the way……………………… Last time I saw the Swan family, the cygnets were a guess; looked like shadows on the water. Think I see 6 or 7 of them…
It’s a stretch but this made me think….”purple mountains majesty”. We’re so flat, we can only see mountains in the clouds. And they’re “above the fruited” sea….. Too far?
Hurry, Jane! It’s raining!
George just left.
6/30 What is the viable date for the eggs? They usually leave the nest in September, not giving much time to grow up.
We are at day 37 for the first egg, day 32 for the second. Most eggs hatch 36-42 days, but it’s rare they go to 42. It’s usually around 38 days for the first egg and a bit less for the second. Ospreys have frequently been seen on Long Island well into Oct. The chicks will have time.
Latest…. close but may curl away…. definitely not how it looked earlier….. the effects of being surrounded by water!
Sorry… cut off times… That bottom one is just after 4pm
Eggs are beak to beak! Possibly discussing a break out!
Jane and George discussing a plan of attack….and or fish order…..don’t know who’s bothering the nest. Not a quiet morning. Was afraid eggs would get stepped on!
This trick never fails……………………………………….. They’ve been playing musical nest…….George’s turn to sit
I have had rain since about 10:30…. since 10:45, it’s been varying degrees of downpour.(now almost noon)… I keep checking and nothing at OZ.
So I checked a weather map and see that the South Fork has a rogue system that came in from the ocean side. But there is a large system heading across the Sound from Connecticut, heading for the North Fork. Waiting…….
Fish #2 @10:56! Jane got up, excited and George came in via the perch…
Jane picked it up and put it down at least 3x, while chatting with George…………………………………… then took off, WITHOUT IT!
George stared at it…… and Jane circled back, dropping from perch……. ” oopsie… TY, Babe, for holding it for me”…….. and out again…
Little buddy stopped by……..
@9:36….. breakfish!
…………… Really nice size… Jane let us know he was up there before he dropped down…..
Jane shows off her form as she takes off…
Jane is back….. she is chirping quietly to the eggies as she approaches…
Peek at eggs… never the same each time…
Someone must be bored this morning and looking to get in trouble……
It looked like pest may have landed as camera was shaking……………… and someone sailed by past the nest…
And another approach seconds later….. Jane is wound up!
Jane is alarming….
George is in… with a stick….
.
They both alarm and scrutinize the skies……. and George gets eggies back
Rain in the forecast….. scattered clouds coming across the Sound….. Hope George shows with some fish fuel for Jane soon.
Speak softly and carry a big stick
Good morning, Jane…. and itsy bitsy spider up on the camera housing…
Good morning, eggies…
Good morning, George…….. but Jane was back in 15 mins.
And here comes trouble!
We know where that goes!
And it worked…. he got the eggies back!
Now, Jane is back and waiting for breakfish….. and still waiting @ 7:42……. Hungry wifey, George!
Good night Jane….pip watch tomorrow!
Jane had a good break…… she flew in to perch and George took his sweet time leaving
Hey, George, like your nose feather!
Dinnerfish @18:19………
George snuck in; Jane barely saw him coming……. Decent sized fish and Jane goes…
Jane’s hsc shell is on the move again……………. The wind puffed it right up against George………………. He wasn’t too pleased and moved it away . The wind gusted again and flung it to the far side of the nest. Hope it stays there and doesn’t go flying.. It’s like a friend of the family!
What a sky!
The eggies from one angle…….
Another look… different from every angle…
The clouds kept rolling through for an ever changing sky show……………
Sun shower…. sky looks great but it’s raining on Jane.
Just looked at forecast and it showed possible random cloud skirting the Island…. well, here it is. Sun at my house.
Starting out with some fog…
George came in and Jane went for a morning run…
Breakfish @07:14….. Nice one, George!
Jane’s a bit on edge, alarming. George came in and Jane went to perch, but he didn’t stay. Now she’s just fussing…
Hi all, we are getting closer to hatch time. Let’s now stay focused on this nest, so please only post pics of the OZ ospreys and nothing from other nests/ or web sites. Hopefully soon we will have a chick, or two, to get lots of screenshots of!
Okay Mary Anne….thank you!…..hoping for a pip tomorrow on my grandpa George’s birthday!
Mary Anne, I posted about the Osoyoos male having blue legs and feet. Wondering if you have a answer or thoughts?
I saw your pics, Isabelle, that’s quite interesting. I wonder if that male landed in something that discolored his legs and feet. If he did, I hope it’s temporary. I have never seen anything like that before.
Don’t think it’s temporary. Said they were like that last year. I’m thinking maybe a gene thing. Viewer said she’s been watching nests for years. Never saw anything like that.
Could it be something he is eating (like flamingos) that is causing this? I am just speaking off the top of my head. Absolutely no scientific background here.
Becky, I have NO idea what is causing the blue legs and feet, but all ospreys eat are fish. He brings the fish in, so the female eats the same fish he does for the most part.
Hi Becky, had the same thought. But than why not the female or offspring?
Maybe his mom had a fling with a booby…{;^))
LOLOL!!!
That’s what someone said on Hog Island (about the booby)
Hi Isabella and everyone, just wanted to say Richmond osprey nest had one like that too, I don’t think they ever figured out why. Hope to see babies here soon!! Be well everyone!
Hi Robin, I remember you from the tweedles. Guess this is one for the experts. Very interesting!
7/1/2020 9;40pm Looking so forward to the peeps happening, thinking that any time now we can celebrate we are all on happy watch!
Nighty night sweeties!…..nighty night Jane 😴
Talk about Moody blues!…….someone over at Hog Island mentioned this nest. The male has blue legs. Osoyoos nest. Couldn’t find any info as to why.
First pic is Hog Island…hauntingly beautiful
A dessert size fishy….. more than enough….
Jane was happy to see it and left a.s.a.p……….. George cleaned his beak and headed for the eggies.
Delivery @20:19…… and there’s Jane passing behind George as he brushes his beak….
Jane is back…..
Possible showers skirting the North Fork…. Should be out over the Sound within an hour and don’t see any more on the weather map. Still muggy and only dropping to mid 70s. ….
………Blah
Stay well and enjoy your night!
Fish @16:27……. Head AND tail both missing…..
Never saw that before…maybe Jane likes the middle piece
June thinks it’s July…..too hot!…hope George brings in some nice cool seaweed!
nfc
I forgot to say you’re welcome! Hope you get to go to the arboretum. If you’ve never been, it’s beautiful. Wanted to give directions to the tree. Due to there are a bazillion of them! Thought of you trying to find the nest. Constantly looking up and getting a crick in your neck! Active nest, have not been disappointed. Tried to get a pic of male flying around. He was too fast!
You are very kind to give those directions with pictures. We went to Bayville and Oyster Bay to see the ospreys. In Oyster Bay I put the website on my phone. The osprey was chatting in the nest. There is a time delay on the Internet. That street is so strange looking with the osprey nest because the view from the nest is the water. The other view is all industrial. I will let you know when I get to the arboretum. Thanks for the pictures you are uploading onto Oz..
🙂………my husbands family used to have a summer home in Bayville. Haven’t taken a drive out there in ages. Maybe one day soon.
Did anyone mention Port Lincoln Ospreycam…. streams on YouTube. ….. their season is different. I think their chicks hatched in September last year. Just starting courtship.
The video isn’t the greatest but if you need another cam, check it out. Was reading the history and sounds like it’s not for the faint at heart.
Amazing how big these chicks are!
This has to be a first!….hope osprey can’t get Covid!
Good morning, Jane!
Starting with some sunshine….. forecast is mixed… pop-up showers, possible t-storms later… blah, blah, blah…
Breakfish @06:43……..
George starts with a fly-by, showing off that big, beautiful fish…
Then, he comes in the back way, making pics a little difficult…… But Jane showed us her big meal before she took off.
I can hear George yelling while I post…. he certainly likes to letter others know whose on that nest!
Jane taking off….
Jane is in…… George has been in and out, short hops, policing the neighborhood.
Blah, blah, blah….hot,hot,hot!🥵🤬
Jane just came down from perch to settle on eggs……good night Jane!
Yay!!!! Dinnerfish @ 19:36…..
George brings a good one!!!
And we had a photobomb bee…..
Buzzzzzzz……love last pic of Jane!
She is a pretty lady….
Passing shower….. first it’s raining………. and it stops. I guess that’s the forecast until tomorrow…. hit and miss.
The rain begins….. possibility of t-storms and winds running through tomorrow…..
Guess those sailboats were hoping to beat the storm…. home they go…
Jane is not a fan…
George brings “flowers” and a break……
I just had about 5 mins. of what sounded like a firehose trained on my house. And then the sun came out…… so I guess it’s gonna be one of those weatherfronts….. hope it stays away from the nest
And down came the rain!…..was like a faucet was turned on!
Beautiful!….and baby seems to be doing better!🙂👍
Synchronized osprey
Feeling 🥵…….
Huge fish and the look on the chicks face!
Hello, Gorgeous! George lets Jane have the nest.
..
15 mins. later, he’s back…… Jane yaps at him to go away and do something constructive…….
And he does! @13:39, he produces a fish! It’s a biggie!
He’s so busy challenging and Jane is in such a hurry to take that fish, she winds up tugging at it while still lying down…. Finally, she’s got it and off she goes.
..
Hey mom…. I could go for a little lunch!🐟
Look at my wings!…..oh yeah..look at mine!
Barnegat dad is handsome….🐥🐥🐥s look to be the same age as oyster bay.
Reflection on the lake!…..hope chick is doing better!
Our lady of the bay!…..seeing all the other chicks makes it more exciting to wait for ours!
Breakfish @07:56…..Looks like George was hungry this a,m,!
George comes in to say good morning and Jane takes a break…
George did a quick fly-out and back
Jane dozes…
