Belle’s Journey
Written by Dr. Rob Bierregaard & Illustrated by Kate Garchinsky
Take flight with Belle, an osprey born on Martha’s Vineyard as she learns to fly and migrates for the first time to Brazil and back–a journey of more than 8,000 miles.
IMPORTANT: Messages from osprey experts
I haven’t seen the little guy yet this morning, but I would be very surprised if he survived the night. That sure was tough to watch yesterday, but that whole process is as much a part of the essence of being an Osprey as is eating a fish. It’s part of the life of Ospreys that was rarely seen before we started putting cameras in nests. As hard as it is, we should not label the behavior as mean or cruel. Being mean or cruel implies that there is intent to do harm just for harm’s sake. Those young were responding to a set of stimuli (very little food being delivered to the nest and the presence of a very small young) in a way that evolution has hard-wired into them. It helps ensure their survival. Nature is not cruel. It is harsh, unforgiving, and often random (had the little guy been born 1st, he would have been just as aggressive as was his sibling), but not cruel or mean.

Thanks Rob for bringing your knowledge and experience to help us all gain perspective here. We are all saddened by the events that unfolded before our eyes and it’s only natural for all of us to feel and express our emotions appropriately. There have been many issues pertaining to intervention which have been discussed amongst us all. There is no doubt in my mind that the right decision was made, to let nature take it’s course. By the way, that doesn’t equate to heartless, on the contrary, nobody feels worse about this then the apparent decision makers. I say apparent, because when all was said and done, and all the issues were properly weighed, there really weren’t any other options. It was clearly pointed out, by experts, that intervening at this stage could have spooked the whole nest to the point of losing all the young. If the little one was saved, and nursed back to health, what kind of a life would it have had, perhaps caged up in a zoo. I remember when I was younger I saw a golden eagle in captivity, caged behind a wire mesh. I could practically see it’s tears. As far as placing the little one in another nest, such a low probability of success would never have justified the possibility of spooking the nest. There’s a piece of me, however heavy hearted, that believes that perhaps it is better to be born free and die free. We mourn for the little one as we marvel at the wonders of nature.
Hello Paul,
Thanks for your query, and you have my admiration for persevering. We know very well how tough your job is, including dealing with an anxious public.
Our policy with our Bird Cams project is essentially “just say no” to pleas for interference. The behavior you are witnessing – while seemingly cruel and heartless to us – is natural for many kinds of birds, especially those that feed on variable, unpredictable food supplies. The little nestling does have a chance to survive, but if it does not then that result was “meant to be” by the nature of Osprey breeding strategy. The wonderful things about these nest cameras also sometimes yield the difficult things for us to watch. As you might know, we actually post a “siblicide alert” on some of our cams where we suspect the possibility exists.
I’m copying your note to Charles Eldermire, project leader for our Bird Cams. He may have some additional comments, and he would be the one to ask if we might be able to use your stored files for biological analysis.
Best wishes, and good luck,
John W. Fitzpatrick
Director, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
It’s also important to acknowledge that intervening can also cause problems of its own—depending on the ages of the birds in the nest, disturbing them can trigger an early fledge. We have restricted the scenarios in which we would even consider intervening to injuries or dangers that are explicitly human-derived. For example, 3 or 4 years ago we were alerted by viewers that one of the osprey chicks at the Hellgate Osprey nest was entangled in monofilament line. We consulted with our partners there (wildlife biologists, raptor researchers, raptor rehabbers) to determine if the monofilament was an issue, and if intervening was both likely to solve the issue AND not have bad effects on the other nestlings. In the end, a quick trip to the nest was scheduled via a bucket truck, the monofilament was removed, and the nestlings all eventually fledged. In that case, all of the permits were already in hand to be studying the ospreys, and we had already discussed how to approach issues in the nest.
Good luck to the young one—hope it all turns out well.

I’ve been to your site—great cam! And I noticed the runt in the nest. This is just normal Osprey reproduction. It happens all the time and you should not intervene. It’s tough to watch, but it’s how nature works. Ospreys almost always lay 3 eggs and on average fledge between 1 and 1.5 young each year. They stagger the hatch so there is a spread of ages in the young. That way, if food is short, the first-hatched (and therefore largest) will get enough food to survive while the smaller nest mates do not. If all three young were the same size and there was only enough food for 1 young, none of the young would get enough food and they would all die. If there’s lots of food, the smallest will eventually get fed and can survive. These nest cams can show some gut-wrenching scenes. The most infamous perhaps was one of the very first Osprey cams (on Long Island somewhere), where the smallest young died. One of the adults carried it out of the nest and after several minutes flew back into the nest and fed it to the other young. Waste-not-want-not at its goriest. At Hog Island up in Maine just last week a Bald Eagle came in and took the young out of the nest. Last year at another nest, cameras documented a Great-horned Owl taking young Ospreys out of a nest in NJ or MD. All of these things have been going on for millions of years and Ospreys are doing fine.

It looks like someone has worked on the nest…….. the wind? Or was George lurking for some last minute remodel before he flew?
Yes Carol, it was caused by the wind several days ago. There are still ospreys around. My husband saw two in Patchogue by the harbor a couple of days ago.
TY…. have a good Columbus Day weekend!
You too, Carol, and all!
Hi! After computer issues started, I broke my thumb. I just haven’t felt like dealing with those computer people. I move slow enough with 2 hands!!!!
So I’m guessing G has moved on. I don’t see anything about him.
So just a quick-as quick as I can be with one finger typing- blessing…..
May the sun rise to greet you
May the winds be at your bak
May the fish be there for you
And until we meet again….
May God hold you in the palms of her hands…
Hoping for a better season in 2021!!!!!
Oh sorry for your mishap-always something-thanks for the Gaelic blessing-stay well all til we meet again in 2021!
CarolV…so sorry to hear about your thumb!….hope it heals soon!🙁👎👍☘️🙂
Ditto, Carol. I still have one on my dock but she/he will be gone too.
Visiting/migrating juvie this morning!
Charlie, that appears to be a juvenile hawk. For sure not an osprey.
My Bad! (but so was the light this am)
Better picture of the juvie hawk now.
Nice! Thank you, Charlie!
Hope your thumb heals quickly…
George by now hopefully is safely at his 2nd, home…
Everyone stay Safe…looking forward to next season..
Somebirdy still hanging out in barnegat
Have a safe journey George!!
This is the last time I saw George….funny how they are all of a sudden gone….just 3 days ago I saw a an osprey flying over my backyard with a fish
When I went to the arboretum it was eerily quiet…even the gulls were quieter and seemed to miss them!
Even with no chick to fledge …the season was enjoyable with our group…thank you Mary Anne and all involved with this cam!
Hope to “see” everyone nest season….stay well!
Yes the season has flown by so fast-we will surely miss the comings & goings-wish them all a safe journey-thanks for clearing that up I was wondering what they were doing in the sand-dedicated people for sure! Stay well all!
It was so great having this cam during the Pandemic of 2020!
6:27:21am if my screenshot did not upload.
Saw an osprey at the nest presumably George 6:26 am 9/17.
I can’t scroll back….figured if Mary Anne wasn’t posting pics of George…& CarolV must be having a humdinger of a time with her computer…..he was gone
Hopefully the screenshot works – I don’t think I am good at this! But George is still here. In prior years I have seen him on the nest as late as 9/27.
Nice photo 😀
TY Isabella. Was wondering how late he stayed.
See you in 2021!!!
If I get back on comp anytime ssoon gonna go thru pics to see some of fave pictures to post
And ty Charlie! Ya dun good!
This is the last time I saw one of the chicks….pretty sure that’s 04 in pic with the gull……one osprey, one gull
Guessing other pic is 04 …due to 05 usually likes the nest
And 05 possible left to head south
🚤🐥🐦
Can anyone tell me what these people are doing?…..beside being covid safe….they seem to be digging and checking cages for something….sometimes there are a lot more of them
There are diamondback terrapin eggs in the sand under those cages. These people are working hard to try and increase the terrapin population on Long Beach Island. The female terrapins come from the bay, cross the street and lay their eggs there and then return to the bay. The terrapin project people then put cages over them. In early July, they also put a fence around the area after the females stop coming to lay eggs. When they hatch in about 60 days, the young terrapins are released into the bay. The ospreys often perched on one of the boats, which belongs to the woman who releases the terrapins. She released over 100 yesterday, and they have released over 1700 terrapin young so far. A very small percentage of them will survive.
Thank you Mary Anne!……wow!.that is so interesting…. I was thinking maybe clams….good for them! And good to have people like that!
Are you referring to the boat I’ve posted pics of?….so lovingly decorated by the osprey?….if so I read she knows and it’s alright with her 🐢👏👍
Yes, her name is Lisa and she has no problem at all with the ospreys being there. All of those boat owners have a bit of cleaning to do!
Visiting gull calling out.
Probably calling out for George to bring a fish!…..sorry seagull…George has gone fishing 🎣!
A visiting gull.
Don’t know what 5 is yapping about….I watch barnegat on mute!
Maybe talking to her sib and seagull friend
Focus…..much better…what a beauty!
Stuck the landing
Fanfare
Quick drink
🐥
🐥.
🐥🚤
nobody here but us chickens!…..went to arboretum….didn’t see or hear an osprey
Can you share the link to this camera please ? Or tell me what to google ? Thanks !
Nancy, just google Barnegat Light osprey cam. It is possible that as of yesterday, that the youngest juvie and the male also, have left on migration.
For all the brave
Just noticed dates on poster. 2001-2020.
We remember
George gave us a quick visit!…..if you blinked…you missed it!
Glad you were there and not blinking!
Winging it in barnegat
This guy’s gull i ble thinking the heron will share his fish!
This guy’s gull i ble thinking the heron will share his fish!!
There is a osprey there
There she is!
Sleeping beauty’s
That’s 05/M, she spends most nights on the perch.
George grabbed the fish and flew off. 12:29 pm
Time to eat kids! 10:56 am
Yum!
Crows arrive to get some fish for breakfast.
George better be careful. The flock will be waiting for him!
George stuck around until 7:31 am, when he flew off, leaving the fish behind.
Is Jane still around ? ?
Have not seen her today, Trinity, but George returned at 12:29 to take the rest of the fish.
Haven’t seen Jane since the fourth…..don’t think the crows or gulls would stand a chance if she was still around
Safe journey Jane..hope to see you in the spring!
God speed Jane…I am sure next year will be successful….
Georges lands with a fish at 7:12 am, alerting.
BIG fish!…no wonder he didn’t finish it
Guessing George was here🐟
Yes he was! At 7:12, will post a couple of pics.
Thank you Mary Anne!!
Beautiful calm bay….no George
Busy chowing down breakfish at oyster bay
And then there was one…..second night of one of three…oyster bay and barnegat….have not seen Bud or itty bitty at night
Sorry CarolV….certainly understand technology frustration !😤🤬…..all I see is an empty nest when I peek in
I am losing the war with my relatively new computer. It has been giving me issues that are hard to explain and have even led to suggestions I may be losing it. Humph!
That happened long ago.
Anyhow I’m forced to call those tech people who make my eyes 👀 cross.
The point is I may not know if George is here or not.
Depending on you guys.
In the mean time will try again with the computer when we both cool down
The crew members happen to be in the nest. Learning to take screenshots with this phone.
But I can’t scroll back to search video. Could do it with my “lesser” phone but not this.
Man, I’m having a grumpy 😾 day.
Just the crew cavorting at the nest……. they’ve been bouncing in and out…..
They’ve been checking on the outside of the nest…. probably the condo of the Sparrows….
George was in….. spent time on perch and sitting in nest……. did some calling
Some of the crew stopped in…..
What I see every time I peek in 🙁
I ran thru the video and saw nothing.
Went back to the time George normally shows and took a picture of the dawn…..
Suddenly, the camera moved and someone, I’m guessing George, flew straight out and into the dawn…………….
There he is
Wonder if this is goodbye 😢
2 🐥🐥s again…sibling left or hanging out elsewhere?
Tuckered out babe in barnegat
Think this is dad eating on a different boat….don’t know how thick covers are…would think talons would puncture it!
Seagull keeps social distance while holding out hope for a tidbit
🐥 is hoping same as seagull
Quick!….take a pic…she’s off the eggs!
Isabella, that was fledgling 04/M on the boat with the fish. It appeared she caught her own as there was no fish delivery at that time. She was there from about 11:40 and she did not leave until 4:03 pm.
Thx Mary Anne!….hard to tell from that distance…couldn’t see white “edging” on chicks feathers…..funny I checked in later…thought something was askew….could that be the same osprey? Yep!
She was wet and we couldn’t see the white edges on her feathers for a long time. But we did see glimpses of the red band on her leg from time to time. When she finally left, I caught a screenshot that clearly showed it was her.
The crows were back….. felt like posing this time!
A committee of crows ( yes, I know…. murder ) flitted around and up to the perch…..on the move…… hard to get a good shot
George didn’t stay long. Looked like he went to perch.
)
Hope everyone is enjoying a quiet weekend………
Realized that for the first time in about 48 years, I am not a laborer!
Oyster Bay….. Dad brought fish to kid in nest
Second kid lands…..
Kid with fish playing keep away….
Dad arrives with 2nd fish! check the times…….
Great fishing on the north shore. These parents are up to the task.
Carol——- glad you aren’t laboring anymore. Enjoy your time!!!
George came in to say hello….. stayed about 15 mins,
Getting ready for dad
Dad
The hustle…..love the look on 04 s face!
The winner takes the prize
Over to her favorite perch…..looks like these people are having a bbq…..she was about to dig in to the fish….seems they chased her off
George came in to sit for a while. He has a small piece of fish………. He meditated then left quietly, still has fish tail
Noticed no pics of Jane 🙁
Where’s George???? He always watches the sailboats on parade!
Birds at the nest….not our birds.
Mr. C. Gull stopped in….
and part of the crew stopped by…..
All quiet @OZ…..
Checked Patchogue…. Dad dropped something and made a quick exit…
@Oyster Bay,…… just saw 2 ….. one suddenly took off about 4:30amEDT. The other one was calling after him… sounded so sad as it echoed thru the dark….
I did see 2 on the perches after sun-up, but of course no idea of which 2.
The start of a beautiful weekend……Lots of sun and highs in the 70s……….
George came in for a brief nest check…..
Mr. Crow is an early bird…. looked like he was picking up scales.
The fairies jumped all over him…..
Beautiful night!
ADMIN Mary Ann…. do you think this could be anything Aidan needs to see? If they even need to know this late…..
And of course it’s a holiday weekend..
Hi Carol, it seems to have resolved itself, it’s not there anymore, but thanks!
MAGIC! TY
Check on PSEGLI nests.
I did a quick run thru videos and at Patchogue, only saw one (guessing same in both pics) Didn’t see adult and didn’t see anyone in sight overnight
First on the left; then on the right…..
And a full cleaning crew!
Oyster Bay… the sibs that sleep together keep together……. but not in the day!
Saw Dad(presume) doing curbside delivery…. get in get out, and count those toes! This kid was in and out, carrying that ever dwindling fish, a few times.
And their modest cleaning crew…..
So far tonight…only two
Whoever it is doesn’t seem to mind the clean up crew!…..nor the traffic!…..I have this pic …Bud & the Bud
Light truck?….or itty bitty
Is Bud still here? I thought just bitty but I don’t know them…. Seems like just the one
I have not seen the youngest in quite some time, it’s always the oldest there lately.
TY, Nary Ann…. I don’t watch enough….
Oops…. Mary Ann
Not sure when or who but someone is on the perch. Have been seeing feather shadow movement for more than an hour…. appx. 15:08
‘
Someone’s calling… sounds more like George…..
Jane and a brilliant ☀️ Sparkling on the bay
Maybe she’s not a fan!
Forgot her sunglasses…..
😎
Friday…. a quiet day…..
George came in, already to defend and yell ….. didn’t stay long.
The fairies stopped in…………………..
And here’s Jane. She stayed a while. George came back in but had nothing.,,,, not much else the rest of the morning.
..
🧚♂️🙂
Instead of a cupola…they have poopola.
Had sound off…don’t know if these people were yelling at the osprey or the camera?
Girls night out!
Hmmmmmm…. I guess this would be fish 2 and 1/2………
I had to look twice to see it….
But Jane did the dance and song and took it…..
It’s as if George was happily enjoying his McDonald’s and suddenly remembers…. so shows up at home
with the red cup and 10 fries and the pickle and 1/2 a bun
George delivers another tree…….
Had to recover after that one!
Jane came to meditate,,,, sat on the right for a good while…..
Winging it!
OMG! Another fish from George! He’s really fattening her up!
Jane came in, looking so pretty and I was surprised George came in behind her with that fish @12:42.
And it’s turned into a bright, bright sunshiny day!
I’ve been making Christmas ornaments (Coronavirus Christmas)…first time making them…..this is one of my Christmas village/gingerbread house creations……if an osprey stayed for Christmas
Thank you CarolV! 🙂….I used this close up pic of yours to help with the face!
My inspiration
Hey! I’m honored! Do I get a percentage of the praise when everyone says how pretty they are? {;^]} Really cute!
Isabella— absolutely gorgeous. Great way to spend your time. Thanks for sharing .
Creative & whimsical 😊
WOW, Isabella!! That is awesome!!!
Thank you everyone!…it took three tries to get the nest right…first time I got carried away with the “sticks “ just like George!
That is really beautiful..
ISABELLA….. thanks for mentioning about the wool seasponge…. I didn’t know they were around here. I thought that was what it looked like but think of them as more warm water creatures.
Who is this?….only the shadow knows….my guess is George and a couple of paddle boarders
Paddle boarders magically disappear!……time jump
Here’s who was hiding………
GM, George! Happy Wednesday!
I think he’s bug hunting……
Visitors! That first one kept pulling on things….
Geez it! The owner! Scram!
That clumpy seems to be Jane’s latest project
Jane watches George flying in…..
Breakfish arrives @07:59………
TY, George! Jane sat on the right for a few,; picking at the fish, it looked like. Then out…..
OMG CarolV!….this is one of the funniest things you posted….love it!
The owner! Scram! Lol!
Like walking on the neighbors lawn as a kid …. “ run I see their car ! “
Well..it certainly is bug season!🐜🕷🦗🦟🐛
George bug hunting
This nest needs a clean up crew!
These people weren’t looking at the 🐥🐥s….they were waving at the camera…..but it seems like the 🐥🐥s are watching them!
Girls just want to sleep 💤
I wonder if they watch the cam or know someone who does? They can go back and see themselves…. the humans I mean!
@18:56…. Here’s George with Janie’s fish! She’s been anticipating!
A more traditional tug o’fish as exchange and Jane is gone…..
Around 18:30-35…. Sounds like Jane, making a lot of noise upstairs…. almost sounds like she’s expecting a fish…..
I hear a gull, too, but more distant…. love to know what’s going on!
Jane came down into nest.
The audio is odd…. wind on mic is very annoying. The birds’ vocals sound odd. And just a minute ago, it sounded like a whole flock of birds was here….. which I gusee is possible, A flock flew over the water before.(think I attached a quick pic)
And while I.m complaining…… getting a lot of white circles popping up and video is jerky… not to mention the focus. Just hope we limp along till our couple goes.
I kind of like seeing these two interacting with just them…. reaffirming their bonds.
This guy came off the perch; George flew in behind……
George comes back about an hr. later with a fish…. Jane was in shortly. George was playing keep away and took off.
While Jane was waiting, she jumped at someone. George was right in to back her up, while guarding his fish……
There was a 14 min. jump in the video, so can’t say if Jane got the fish from Mr. Funnyguy.
I’m guessing this was the earlier visitor…. his face has been blurred to disguise his identity…teehee…
Jane came to suggest he leave.
They both seem to be spending time on the perch, doing a laot of calling. I haven’t seen them much but sure know they are there!
This is the first time I saw a gull on the nest
The best way to view barnegat!
I caught a fish 🎣 this big!……oh yeah… I caught one this big!!
Lol – perfect!!
George does the fan dance before takeoff
He was on the perch…than back with 🐟 and circle ⭕️!
A fish stand-off?………Jane winks at us
Does her best Philippine eagle impression
She was relaxing…til George started yapping….decided to join in after George persuaded her
And we come back full circle!
Back to relaxing
George!….say hello to our fans!
⭕️
Thats a 50’s updo all teased up! So happy to see they’re still here-thank you ladies for all you updates & comments-will surely miss you guys!
Hopeful that the rain has stopped @PSEG/Oyster Bay
A rainy Wednesday…..
Jane comes in calling….. she left right before George showed up with a big fish…. Is it gonna be one of those days?
George doesn’t hang around long…..
Jane is back and singing before she lands…
And here’s her honey…. looks like he saved all the rest of that fish for her…
And off our soggy girl goes…..
Camera shy
Where are the humans?
There humans
Good one!!
As we inch towards the end of summer and the impending departure of George & Jane , that feeling of sadness has begun. We wait all winter for the arrival of these beloved birds and each season is like a gift, even this one with its beginning drama and unfortunate chick outcome. I think this is my 6th year watching OZ ! It has sparked an interest in osprey that only grows with each passing year. I’m thankful for the ladies who consistently post highlights and the witty commentary, this site really is a little slice of heaven . 😊
Thanks, Trinity, for summing up all our feelings. Hard not to be a little melancholy as the season winds down. We worry about our feathered friends and their long journeys till they return.
So true, Trinity. I’ve had that lump in my throat lately that always comes at this time of year. I too am very grateful for all the posts and pictures keeping us up to date.
Great comment Trinity. It sums up how we feel at the end of the season. I have been here from the beginning too. The pictures and comments are a joy to read every day. We all want success in the nest and enjoy learning about the ospreys . They have a tough life in the wild. It is so wonderful to be able to watch and learn. Thanks to all who have put their stamp on this site.
happy to see George & Jane still here-not looking forward to the “empty nest” for sure-Why does Sept to March seem so much longer than March to Sept? Guess its the shorter days! Yes thank you for the tidbits you post on here-very comical & informative!
I’m going to miss Jane & George…going to miss our group!….going to the arboretum will be strangely quiet!
Will be a void for sure…..but spring brings new hope!
Jane drops…….. and it’s her turn to stare……
George drops. Thought I heard them both up there!
George watches as Jane tears up his prized “cube”. Not sure what that is. Looks like a compressed cube of grasses; reminded me of a big sea sponge/luffa…
He doesn’t look approving….
Hey!….that sea wool sponge was my favorite thing in the nest!
Don’t forget! If the sky is clear by you. go out and howl!!!!!!! Oh, heck… even if it’s cloudy!
Love how the clouds are parting to let the Moon shine in all her glory!
Looks like a moonset
🌕 I love watching the moon change from night to night 🌘
Jane is in, with a dinner request….. just don’t see the waiter……
George must be upstairs,,,, heard him @17:07
George dropped down and, after a few minutes, Jane left……
Think I know where she went!
Excuse me Garçon
Glad to still see Jane!
This little osprey has a 🐟……this little osprey has none
Hey!….do you guys know where my 🐟 is?
Pretty sure it comes from that direction
You going to gavone that 🐟?
This is exhausting!
Siblings !
10:05….. George brings a fish and Jane is right down from the perch!
George hung around straightening the nest. I can hear him now, on the perch, declaring ownership..(11:00 am)
Good-bye, August…….
Morning, George! He’s been in and out a few times, checking and calling.
A cloudy day ahead, low-mid70s. Fall is in the air….
George’s yelling chased away the fairy orbs!
🧚♂️🧚♂️🧚♂️……always like to see the fairies!
Caught some fairies sneaking in….
Itty bitty visits the nest
The girls hang out
The girls still all hanging out! Figured someone would have gone by now.
George switched to soft goods and brought an assortment to cover the nest bed…..
Break….
And back to work…..
Looks like he’s trying to give himself a weird pedicure!
Yeah…. I’ve seen nails as long as that last pic!
Winterizing perhaps ???
Look who’s here! I did a comic double-take!!!! And the computer and I are at odds, so couldn’t edit properly. with speed
Jane , of course, has to tweek George’s work.
George has been upstairs and they trade places….
Yeah!…Jane!
George brought his fish @9:34 and hung around. When he started snacking, he decided to eat out…..
George showed just after 2pm… He was in and out numerous times. Even when I didn’t see him, he was calling from the perch.
And a day without a stick is just not complete.
Lost in space…. thought I posted pic of G and the fairy orbs.
Aug 31- George arrived with a fish at 9:34 am. He stayed until about 10:40 am. No sign of Jane yet.
